A Vicksburg teen faces charges of possession of an explosive device and having weapons — knives — on school property after a homemade explosive was found and detonated at Warren Central Junior High on Wednesday afternoon.
A second student taken into custody at the school Wednesday was charged with having a weapon — knife — on school property. However, Vicksburg Police Department Capt. Sandra Williams said in a press release issued Wednesday evening that authorities do not believe the second student charged was involved with making or transporting the explosive device to the school.
Williams said investigators executed a search warrant at one of the student’s home on Wednesday evening and recovered materials thought to have been used in the construction of the explosive device.
However, Williams said in the press release the investigation into the incident determined the device would have caused minor to no damage if detonated.
Both students were place in the Warren County Detention Center pending a hearing in youth court.
At about 12:18 p.m. Wednesday, school officials called law enforcement and began evacuating students from Warren Central Junior High to the auditorium at nearby Vicksburg Junior High after receiving information that a student had brought some type of explosive onto campus.
The Vicksburg Police responded with K-9 officer Thor and his handler, officer Leone Young. VPD Chief Walter Armstrong said the K-9 “alerted” on a backpack located in the school’s library.
Clinton Police Department’s bomb squad was called, and later used a robot to remove the explosive from the building. The explosive was detonated by the Clinton Police bomb squad.
Police would not release the name of the ages of the students arrested. They did say both are junior high school-aged children.
Vicksburg Warren School District Superintendent Chad Shealy said classes at all schools will go on as normal on Thursday.
Armstrong commended the Clinton Police Department bomb squad, the Warren County Sheriff’s Department, the FBI and the ATF, as well as the school district staff for assistance with the investigation.
