Vicksburg explodes in 8th inning, beats Clinton

[04/02/01] Vicksburg (15-5) scored six runs in the eighth inning after Clinton had tied the game in the seventh, for a 17-11, four-hour marathon win at Clinton.

Justin Henry picked up the win with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. He retired Clinton in order in the bottom of the eighth.

The Gators were scheduled to play Provine, but the game was canceled.

“We didn’t get done (with Clinton) until after 4,” said VHS assistant coach Jackie Williamson. The Provine game was originally scheduled for 4 in downtown Jackson.

John Rohrer led the Gators’ 16-hit explosion with a pair of doubles, a single and three RBIs. J.J. Brown added a pair of doubles and three RBIs, while Mitchell Beauman had two singles and two RBIs.

David Stagg had two singles, a triple and three stolen bases and Henry had three singles, three RBIs and three stolen bases.

The speed-happy Gators stole 14 of 15 bases on the day.

“Our hitting came around,” Williamson said.

“When the game got tied, our kids stepped up and played like they are supposed to.”
