Thunder pounds Winona in opener

[07/13/01] Aaron George threw a complete-game, five-hitter and blasted three hits as the Vicksburg Thunder beat Winona, 10-2, at Starkville High in the first round of the Dixie Boys state tournament on Thursday.
George scattered five hits and allowed both runs in the sixth inning with the Thunder, a team of St. Aloysius players, up 10-0.
Miles Ashley had two hits including a home run and two RBIs, Blake Warnock had two hits and an RBI and George had a home run and three RBIs.
“With Aaron pitching, they’d didn’t have many opportunities to put the ball in play,” Thunder coach Joe Graves said. “They had some big boys, but we just shut them down.”
The Thunder (13-10) were scheduled to play Neshoba Central at Starkville Friday at 5 p.m.
On Sunday, the final day of the Thunder’s tournament in Pensacola. Fla., they beat Jonesboro, Ark., 11-1 and lost to Pine Forest, Fla., 4-3.
In the win, George went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, a triple and a double and Miles Ashley was and Scott Fife both went 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Ashley also had a double. Winning pitcher Zane Key struck out seven and allowed two hits.
In the loss, the Thunder led 3-1 until committing two miscues in the final inning.
George was 2-for-3 with an RBI while Blake Warnock and Alex Frisbee also doubled. Charlie Amborn took the loss, allowing seven hits and striking out five.
The Thunder, the only Class 1A team in the tournament, went 3-2 on the road trip.
