JAMES P. CARTER
James P. Carter died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at his home in Brandon. He was 55.
Mr. Carter was born in Memphis and was a longtime resident of Vicksburg before moving to Brandon in 1985. He was a manager of Bumper’s Restaurants until his retirement. He was a member of Trace Ridge Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Carol Ann Carter of Brandon; one daughter, Kelly Carter of Brandon; his mother, Daisy Carter of Little Rock, Ark.; one granddaughter, J.C. Baxter of Brandon, three brothers, Buck Carter of Memphis, Ronald Carter of Little Rock and Donald Carter of Atlanta.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Nowell-Flippin Funeral Home in Ridgeland. Burial will follow at Jessamine Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 until 8 tonight at the funeral home.
JAMES COLEMAN
CARLISLE James “Sammy” Coleman died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, at Vicksburg Medical Center. He was 74.
Mr. Coleman was a resident of Carlisle.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. today at Jones Chapel M.B. Church in Carlisle. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
Westhaven Memorial Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
ANN LAMBERT DAVIS
CLINTON Ann Lambert Davis died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, at her home in Clinton. She was 54.
Mrs. Davis was born in Gastonia, N.C., and moved to Vicksburg in 1962. She graduated from H.V. Cooper High School.
She attended Mississippi University for Women and graduated from Mississippi College. After graduation, she taught special education classes at Lovett Elementary in Clinton. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Clinton.
Mrs. Davis served as president of the PTA for Clinton Park Elementary and Clinton Junior High School, president of the Clinton Junior Civic League and legislative chairman for the Mississippi Federation of Women’s Clubs.
She was named Clinton’s Woman of the Year in 1984. For the past 15 years, she was executive director of the Independent Nursing Home Association of Mississippi.
She is survived by her husband, Kim Davis of Clinton; two sons, Todd Davis of San Antonio and Mike Davis of Valdosta, Ga.; her mother, Mickey Lambert of Vicksburg; one sister, Andrea Phifer of Plano, Texas; and two brothers, Doug Lambert of Nashville and Ronald Lambert of Niceville, Fla.
Services will be at 3 p.m. today at the First United Methodist Church.
Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Lakewood Memorial Park.
Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home of Clinton has charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the capital building fund of First United Methodist Church, Highway 80 East in Clinton.
OTTO MAURICE HORN
TALLULAH Otto Maurice Horn died Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, at the Madison Parish Hospital in Tallulah. He was 95.
Mr. Horn was born in Montgomery, La., and moved to Madison Parish when he was 22. He graduated from Northwestern State College and received a masters degree from Mississippi College. He taught math for 38 years at Tallulah High School. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Tallulah.
Mr. Horn was a member of the Lions Club and Tallulah Masonic Lodge No. 308. He was also an ordained minister.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Olga Mae Byram Horn.
He is survived by three daughters, Betty Todd of Lafayette, La., Dona Hutchings of Bossier City, La., and Judy Guillot of Baton Rouge; one sister, DeWanna Brown of Pollock, La.; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at First Baptist Church of Tallulah with the Rev. John Rushing officiating. Burial will follow at Silver Cross Cemetery.
GAYLE HUBBARD
Gayle Hubbard died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at her home. She was 62.
Mrs. Hubbard was born and reared in Vicksburg. She worked as a beautician for a number of years. She was a member of Bethesda Presbyterian Church in Hinds County.
She was preceded in death by a son, Jimmy Hubbard of Vicksburg.
She is survived by her husband, Melvin Hubbard of Vicksburg; one son, Rocco Hubbard of Vicksburg; and one brother, Larry Sneed of Houston, Texas.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Bethesda Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Neil Stewart officiating. Burial will follow at Bethesda Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Monday until the service at the church.
Pallbearers will be Joel Hubbard, Rodney Hubbard, Shelby Hubbard, Tony Hubbard, Justin Tucker and Robby Wallace.
RUBY ABLES PEYTON
Ruby Ables Peyton died Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, at Heritage House Nursing Home. She was 87.
Mrs. Peyton was born in El Reno, Okla., and moved to Vicksburg in 1936. She was a homemaker, an artist and a fisher. She was a member of the Friendship Club, the Home Demonstration Club and several garden clubs. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Vicksburg.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles E. Peyton Sr.
She is survived by two sons, Charles E. Peyton Jr., of Little Rock, Ark., and Fred G. Peyton of Vicksburg; one daughter, Arlene P. Barclay of Kingwood, Texas; and one brother, Robert W. Ables of Winter Haven, Fla.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Glenwood Funeral Home with Dr. John G. McCall and Rev. Eric Thomas officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Memorial Park.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. Monday until the service at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the John G. McCall Scholarship Fund of the First Baptist Church, 1607 Cherry St., Vicksburg, or to a favorite charity.
Pallbearers will be Chuck Peyton, Forrest Peyton, Christopher Barclay, Kenton Heinze, Chuck Boyd, Bill Dorman, J.W. Carter and Pinkey Ahlrich.
LOU ELLA SHELLY
FAIRBANKS, Alaska Lou Ella Shelly died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at the Denali Center in Fairbanks, Alaska. She was 83.
Mrs. Shelly was a retired nurse’s aide. She was a member of the Daughter of the Elks. She was a former usher and member of Holly Grove M.B. Church in Warren County.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Tillman Shelly; her parents; Sterling Williams and Lizzie Meeks Williams; and one sister, Elelyen Buck.
