[09/17/02]Football may be the dominant sport during the fall season, but for anyone 19 years of age and younger, the Bovina Complex is offering another sport in which the only protective gear is shin pads soccer.
“Kids can learn a sport, particularly with kids that may not play football, or basketball or baseball, they can come out here and be a part of something,” league director Jimmy Harrison said.
The league has six different age groups: Under-6, under-8, under-10, under-12, under-15 and the 16-to 19-year-olds age group.
“We try to stress the fun aspect with the kids, where the older kids get a little more structure,” VSO president Mark Richter said.
The soccer league has already begun its season, but the Bovina Complex is still taking registrations, and any child who registers is guaranteed to play.
“We have people continuously trickling in that we accommodate,” Richter said. “Our attitude is, anyone that wants to play will play.”
League teams will face competition from surrounding areas such as Jackson, Clinton, Greenville and Brookhaven and the season will run until the last Saturday in October.
