Mary Frances McTaggert

Mary Frances McTaggert died Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003, at her home in Vicksburg.

Mrs. McTaggert was a lifelong resident of Vicksburg and was a paper carrier for The Vicksburg Post for more than 30 years. She was a member of Bowmar Baptist Church.

Mrs. McTaggert is survived by one son, John Joseph McTaggert of Vicksburg; a daughter, Patricia M. Lee of Vicksburg; a brother, Robert McBroom of Vicksburg; and a sister, Lealia Shingler of Vicksburg.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Glenwood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mark Rowlan officiating. Burial will be at Green Acres Memorial Park.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Jerry McDuff, Randy Wright Sr., William P. Lee Jr. Scott R. Partridge, Roger Lester and Paul Conerly.

Honorary pallbearers will be Ronald Shingler, Charles Shingler, Roger Richie, Walter Richie Jr., Johnny Richie, Todd McBroom, Don McBroom, James Hearn, Jr., Pat Hearn and Greg Hearn.

Rev. R. Stewart Smith

The Rev. R. Stewart Smith of Madison and formerly of Vicksburg died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson. He was 86.

The son of the late Dr. Jospeh Anderson and Alvaretta McKee Smith, Rev. Smith served in the Mississippi Conference of the United Methodist Church for 43 years.

He was a former dean of the chapel, professor of religion and assistant football coach at Millsaps College in Jackson. He was senior pastor of United Methodist Churches in Mississippi City, Port Gibson, Hawkins and Crawford Street in Vicksburg, Broadmeadow in Jackson, First Church in Gulfport and Parkway Heights in Hattiesburg.

Rev. Smith received a master’s of divinity degree from Emory University and post-graduate degrees from Columbia University and Union Theological Seminary, both in New York.

He graduated from Meridian High School and received a bachelor of education degree from the University of Mississippi. While at Ole Miss, he was on the track and football teams and was a member of the “M” Club. Rev. Smith also was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity, Omicron Delta Kappa, the Wesley Foundation and Who’s Who and was president of the state YMCA.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Broadmeadow United Methodist Church in Jackson. Visitation will be from 4 until 6 tonight at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home in Jackson and from 10 a.m. until the hour of service at the church.

Rev. Smith was preceded in death by an infant son, Joseph Anderson Smith II.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Frances Brunkhorst Smith, formerly of Sedalia, Mo.; three sons, Stewart Smith Jr. of Jackson, Gene Smith of Hattiesburg and David Smith of New Orleans; a sister, Dorothy Sue Smith Lovejoy of Memphis; a brother, Warren Smith of Madison; four grandchildren, Kyle, Sean and Clay Smith of Hattiesburg and Olivia Frances Smith of Jackson.

Memorials may be made to the Art of Preaching Fund at the Center for Ministry at Millsaps College or Broadmeadow United College or Broadmeadow United Methodist Church in Jackson.

Beulah Barr Way

Beulah Barr Way died Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003, at River Region Medical Center. She was 95.

Mrs. Way was a native of Plauceville, La., and had lived in Vicksburg since 1948. She was a member of Bowmar Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard C. Way II, and a son, Anthony B. Way.

She is survived by two sons, Richard C. Way III and Wren C. Way, both of Vicksburg; four daughters, Barbara W. Pace, Betty E. Way and Dixie W. Kelly, all of Vicksburg, and Mary Louise Perritt of Raymond; 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Glenwood Chapel in Vicksburg with the Rev. Mark Rowlan officiating. Burial will follow at Utica City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 until 4 p.m. today at the funeral home in Vicksburg.

Pallbearers will be Adam Way, Chuck Kelly, Tommy Kelly, Chris Perritt, Ricky Way, Robert Way, Jerry Thomas, Eric Hays, Jay Duffy and Anthony Barr Way.

Suzette Foster White

OAK GROVE Suzette Foster White died Friday, Feb. 21, 2003, at her home in Oak Grove. She was 61.

Born in Stamps, Ark., Mrs. White was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Oak Grove and worked as a teller at the West Carroll National Bank in Oak Grove. She taught kindergarten at Fiske Union School for 11 years until 1986.

Mrs. White was preceded in death by her father and mother, Otis Ray and Ruth Foster.

She is survived by her husband, John E. White of Oak Grove; a son, Sammy White of Monroe, La.; two granddaughters, Taylor White and Hannah White, both of Monroe; her stepmother, Earlene Foster of Sarepta, La.; four brothers, Jerry Foster of North Carolina, Donnie Foster and David Foster, both of Hope, Ark., and Steve Foster of Texarkana, Texas,; and three sisters, Janet Howard and Barbara Dick, both of Sarepta, and Sheila Foster of Hope.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Cox Chapel in Oak Grove with the Revs. Rick Aultman and Gayle Riles officiating. Burial will be at Epps Cemetery in Epps, La.

Pallbearers will be Guy Seward, Ted Paxton, Archie Aultman, Jess Smith, James Henry Williamson and William Turner.
