Avance Banks Sr.

Services for Avance Banks Sr. will be at 11 a.m. today at W.H. Jefferson Chapel with the Rev. Larry Nix officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Israel Cemetery.

Mr. Banks died Monday, March 31, 2003, at his home. He was 71.

A resident of Vicksburg, Mr. Banks was retired from the Navy.

He was preceded in death by his father, William T. Banks Sr.

Survivors include a son, Avance Banks Jr. of Vicksburg; a daughter, Nicole Cassandra Banks of Buffalo, N.Y.; his mother, Mary Tillman Banks of Vicksburg; four brothers, Peter Banks Sr. of Bossier City, La., William T. Banks Jr. of Vicksburg, Elisha Banks of Grand Island, N.Y., and Brooks Banks of Salis, Mich.; and two sisters, Drucilla Burns of Vicksburg and Darie R. Johnson of Detroit.

Delbert Creek Jr.

MCGEHEE, Ark. Delbert “Cotton” Creek Jr. died Wednesday, April 2, 2003, in McGehee, Ark. He was 77.

A native of McGehee, Mr. Creek was retired from Arkansas Power and Light. He was a Navy veteran and of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Delbert Creek and Dorothy Leasure Creek.

Survivors include a son, Keith Creek of Little Rock, Ark.; a daughter, Karen Sue Bobb of Pine Bluff, Ark.; two grandchildren; and relatives in Vicksburg.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at McGehee Cemetery with Tommy Cunningham officiating. Burial will follow under the direction of Griffin Funeral Service of McGehee.

Visitation will be from 4 until 8 tonight and from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Gracie Williams Davis

Gracie Williams Davis died Wednesday, April 2, 2003, at River Region Medical Center. She was 92.

Mrs. Davis lived in Vicksburg and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Electra Grand Chapter Elizabeth No. 4, and the YFAS Club of Fayette.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Moriah Williams; her husband, Shed Davis; and one daughter, Annie M. Hicks.

She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Hattie Williams of Chicago, Ill.; five grandchildren, Grace Brown, Lillian Harris and William Hicks, all of Vicksburg, Sharon Hicks of Clinton, and John M. Hicks Sr. of Irving, Texas; 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Mt. Elem M.B. Church with the Rev. Leonard Walker officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Squan Devell Edwards

Services for Squan Devell Edwards will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Vicksburg City Auditorium with the Rev. Kemp Burley Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Jenning Family Cemetery in Claiborne County under the direction of W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home.

Mr. Edwards died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at his home. He was 18.

Squan was a student at Vicksburg High School, where he was a member of the football team, ROTC and Blue Knights Club. He was a member of Greater Jerusalem M.B. Church.

He is survived by his father and stepmother, Johnnie and Alicia Edwards of Vicksburg; his mother, Yolanda Thompson; four brothers, Johnnie Devonte Edwards of Vicksburg, Jamond Thompson and Joe Eddie Thompson, both of Port Gibson, and Isiah Thompson; two sisters, Carolyn Edwards of Vicksburg and Yelvena Ellis of Port Gibson; his maternal grandmother, Nancy Jennings of Port Gibson; his paternal grandmother, Carrie Edwards of Port Gibson; and aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Roy Sanchez

TRANSYLVANIA Roy Sanchez died Wednesday, April 2, 2003, at his home in Transylvania. He was 59.

Mr. Sanchez was preceded in death by his father, Pete Castro Navarro; and a sister, Ruby Carroll Roddey.

Survivors include his wife, Mary E. Sanchez of Transylvania; two sons, Troy Deon Sanchez of Walnut Ridge, Ark., and Pedro Miguel Sanchez of Yuma, Ariz.; a daughter, Angela Issacs of Tallulah; two stepdaughters, Alicia Jackson of Lake Providence and Debbie Vaughn of Longmont, Colo.; his mother, Margareta Shores of Monticello, La.; three brothers, Pete Navarro Jr. of Bastrop, La., Ernest H. Navarro of Forest, La., and Christopher H. Navarro of Monticello; a sister, Lucy A. Smith of Harrisburg, Ark.; nine grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and friends.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the home of the deceased, 936 Homestead Road, with the Rev. Tim Fullmer officiating. Burial will follow at Providence Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Cox Funeral Home in Lake Providence.

Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today at the deceased’s home.

Alice Lorraine Young

TALLULAH Alice Lorraine Young died Thursday, April 3, 2003, at River Region Medical Center. She was 64.

Mrs. Young was born in Vicksburg and lived most of her life in Tallulah, attending public schools and church there. She was a poet and her poems appeared in the Madison Journal under the heading of “Alice’s Corner.”

Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her parents, Martin Trantham and Lorraine Harris Young; a step-brother, Beverly Stone; and an aunt, Lavinia Young.

She is survived by an aunt, Weatherford Young of Brookhaven, and cousins Ann Collette, Don Young and David Young of Jackson; Leslie Young of Dothan, Ala., and Leo Harris of Cape Girardeau, Mo.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Crothers-Glenwood Funeral Home with the Revs. Richard Taylor and Kent Fabre officiating. Burial will follow at Silver Cross Cemetery.

Visitation will be at the funeral home Sunday from 1 p.m. until the service.

Memorials may be made to a favorite charity.

Pallbearers will be George S. Weaver, Charles L. Stamey, Joe Straughter, James M. Panquin, Leo Watson and Theo Watson.

Honorary pallbearers will be Beta Gandy, Rhetta Gandy, Judy Folden, Janie Fabre, Regina and Billy Watson, Mae Stamey, Jessie Stone, Martha Satchfield, Hilda Massey, Arthur Sparling, Erma Straughter, Crystal Paris, Joan Hattaway, Dorothy Ann and Jack Millikin, Carroll Regan, Fred Wyley, Kay and Calvin Adams, Dr. Leonard Neumann Jr. and staff, Dr. Gerald Robertson and employees of Life Care Counseling of Delhi, nurses and staff of Delta Home Care, Inc.
