The Vicksburg Post prints obituaries for residents, former residents and residents’ immediate family members who resided elsewhere when notified by a family member or a funeral home. There is no charge for printing an obituary, but all are edited to meet the newspaper’s requirements.
Hilliard C. Berry Sr.
Services for Hilliard C. Berry Sr. will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Charles Boykins officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Visitation with rosary will be from 6 until 7 p.m. Friday at W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home.
Mr. Berry died Monday, June 9, 2003, at River Region Medical Center. He was 80.
Mr. Berry was a retired letter carrier and vehicle operations manager for the U.S. Post Office. He was a veteran of the Army, serving in World War II.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, where he was in the Men’s Club; American Legion Tyner-Ford Post No. 213 and the VFW.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James C. Berry Sr. and Blanche Berry Buck; his stepfather, Henry B. Buck; his wife, Ethel J. Berry; a son, Donald Lamar Berry; one brother, Henry McClinton; and a sister, Juanita Berry.
Survivors include two sons, Hilliard “Butch” Berry Jr. of Vicksburg and Jonathan Berry of Richmond, Va.; two daughters, Blanchette B. Adams of Vicksburg and Ethel E. “Bonnie” Berry James of Phoenix, Ariz.; a brother, James Charles Berry Jr. of Los Angeles; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Savannah Dee
Savannah “Peanut” Dee died Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at University Medical Center in Jackson. She was 50.
A homemaker, Mrs. Dee was born in Claiborne County. She was of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Dee Sr. and Rosie L. Buck Dee; two sisters, Flora Jean Smith and Stella Mae Pitts; her maternal grandparents, Emma Buck and Will Buck; and her paternal grandparents, Ollie Mae Bruce and Andy Dee.
She is survived by two sons, Ernest Dee of Vicksburg and Ronnie Dee; two daughters, Carolyn E. Dee and Jacquelyn R. Dee, both of Vicksburg; four brothers, Henry Dee Jr. and L.C. Dee, both of Utica, Jimmy Dee of Vicksburg and Leon Dee of Forman, Ark.; six sisters, Mary Petties, Irene Dee and Carrie Dee, all of Vicksburg, Katie Shears and Betty Miller, both of Utica, and Bernice Adams of Troy, Ala.; 14 grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home with the Rev. E.F. Cosey officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Ron L. Dodson
UTICA Ron L. Dodson died Monday, June 9, 2003, at Florida Medical Center in Lauderdale Lakes, Fla. He was 59.
Mr. Dodson was the son of Lloyd and Ida Mae Dodson, who preceded him in death. He was born and reared in Utica and attended Cooper High School in Vicksburg.
He was a graduate of Millsaps College and Tulane University. He worked for Dow Chemical Corp. in California for a number of years before moving to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where he was a financial adviser and planner with Adadu and Associates architects.
Survivors include an aunt and uncle, Jayne M. Dodson Tillman and W.A. “Bill” Tillman of Utica, and a number of cousins.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Utica Cemetery. Burial will follow under the direction of Glenwood Funeral Home of Utica.
Staff Sgt. Steve McFarland
EDWARDS Staff Sgt. Steve McFarland died Friday, June 6, 2003, in Edwards. He was 41.
Sgt. McFarland was a retired Marine veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn R. McFarland of Oceanside, Calif.; four sons, Lamont Williams, Luther Williams, Bryant McFarland and Demetius McFarland, all of Oceanside; his mother, Mary McFarland-Johnson of Edwards; two brothers, Joseph McFarland and Kenneth R. McFarland, both of Edwards; and a sister, Jennifer McFarland of Jackson.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sand Hill M.B. Church in Edwards. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 until 8 p.m. Friday at Lakeover Funeral Home in Jackson and from 10 a.m. Saturday until the service at the church.
