Samuel Rowland McLaughlin Sr.

FLORENCE, S.C. Samuel Rowland McLaughlin Sr. died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2003, in Florence, S.C. He was 54.

Mr. McLaughlin was born in Florence to the late I.J.L. “Buddy” McLaughlin Jr. and the late Thelma Ethel Rowland McLaughlin of Vicksburg. He was a graduate of Presbyterian College, where he lettered in football for four years. He was a member of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity.

He was a past member of the Sertoma Club, a founding member of the Pee Dee Horsemans Association, a member and past board member of the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders and Exhibitors Association, president of the South Carolina Walking Horse Association and president of the South Carolina Horse Show Association.

He was a trustee and elder of Effingham Presbyterian Church and had served as a member of the Session and as a deacon. He was founder of Manos Extendidas and served as a missionary to Honduras. He was a former member of the Florence County Planning Commission.

Mr. McLaughlin owned The McLaughlin Co. and was owner and operator of Wildwood Farms.

He is survived by his wife, Donna Anderson McLaughlin of Florence; two daughters, Stephanie McLaughlin Rawlinson and Celia Abigail McLaughlin, both of Florence; a son, Samuel Rowland McLaughlin Jr. of Florence; a brother, I.J. “Larry” McLaughlin III of Effingham; one granddaughter; and other relatives, including members of the Rowland, Nosser and Pettway families of Vicksburg.

Services were at 2 p.m. Saturday at Effingham Presbyterian Church. Burial followed at McLaughlin Cemetery.

Viola C. Morgan

Services for Viola C. Morgan will be at noon Thursday at St. Mark Freewill Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 until 6 p.m. Wednesday at Dillon-Chisley Funeral Home and from 10 a.m. until the service Thursday at the church.

Ms. Morgan died Friday, Sept. 26, 2003, at River Region Medical Center. She was 97.

She was a member of St. Mark Freewill Baptist Church, where she served on the Mother Board.

Survivors include a stepson, Eugene Morgan of Vicksburg; her cousin and caregiver, Mary Barnes of Vicksburg; and other relatives.

Norma F. Murphy

Norma F. Murphy died Monday, Sept. 29, 2003, at River Region Medical Center. She was 87.

Born in Vicksburg, Mrs. Murphy was the daughter of the late Lott Herold and Florence Roche Fortner. She attended Vicksburg public schools and was an associate member of the Junior Auxiliary of Vicksburg. She was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church and the Vicksburg Country Club.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by seven sisters, two brothers and a grandchild.

She is survived by her husband, Thomas Edward Murphy of Vicksburg; a daughter, Florence M. Boren of Vicksburg; a son, Thomas Edward Murphy Jr. of Vicksburg; and five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Riles Funeral Home with the Rev. Patrick Farrell, pastor of St. Paul Catholic Church, officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Wednesday until the service at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Joe Letter, Paul Banchetti, Bobby Amborn, Joe Gerache, Fred Baldwin, Jack Burrell, Bo Morrissey, Blake Boren and Barry Palmertree.

Memorials may be made to Vicksburg Catholic School, 1900 Grove St., Vicksburg, MS 39183.

Joe Nailor

Services for Joe Nailor will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Mount Pilgrim M.B. Church, Freetown, with the Rev. Joseph Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home.

Mr. Nailor died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003, at River Region Medical Center. He was 91.

He was an Army veteran and was retired from Waterways Experiment Station. He was a member of Mount Pilgrim M.B. Church, where he was on the Usher Board. He was also a member of American Legion Tyner-Ford Post No. 213.

Mr. Nailor was preceded in death by his parents, Ephriam Nailor Sr. and Elizabeth Sims Nailor; two brothers, Ephriam Nailor Jr. and Monroe Nailor; and a sister, Annie Lee Johnson.

Survivors include a niece, Gloria Rankin of Vicksburg; her caregiver, Bobbie Bass of Vicksburg; and members of the Sims, Bass, Cooper, Hebron, McFarland, Burse, Goodman and Elzie families of Vicksburg.
