Voters urged to learn precinct assignments early

(10/02/03)With 31 days before Mississippi’s general election, the chairman of Warren County’s election commission said he hopes voters who are in doubt learn their precinct assignments before Nov. 4.
“Don’t wait till the last day,” James McMullin said. “Call up beforehand.”
Due to the decennial redistricting, lines were adjusted for the three county districts used to elect constables and justice court judges, those drawn for the five supervisor districts and statewide for House and Senate seats.
Postal cards were sent months ago to all Warren County voters telling them if they were assigned a different voting place as part of that process, but many may be in doubt.
The numbers to call are 636-3961 or 638-6583.
McMullin also said candidates and voters need to understand that a majority is not required to win a general election. Though runoffs were possible after party primary elections Aug. 5, none will follow the general election even though races for four offices are being contested by three or more candidates. “The person who gets the most votes wins,” McMullin said.
Friday at 5 p.m. is the last moment for new voters to register for the Nov. 4 election. In neighboring counties, poll books won’t be closed to new voters until noon Saturday. Mail-in registrations must be postmarked by Saturday and a downloadable form is available at www.sos.state.-ms.us.
