James R. Crawford
James R. “Bob” Crawford died Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003, at University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. He was 68.
Mr. Crawford moved from Norfolk, Va., to Vicksburg, where he had lived for the past year. He had retired from the Navy after 20 years of service.
He was preceded in death by Klara Kelly.
He is survived by five brothers, Guy Crawford of Harrisville, Billy Crawford and Glenn Crawford, both of Jackson, Gene Crawford of Magee and Tommy Crawford of Vicksburg; a sister, Grace Ross of Jackson; and nieces and nephews.
Services with military honors were at 3 p.m. Monday at Stonewall Baptist Church Cemetery in Mendenhall with the Rev. Bob Jones officiating. Burial followed under the direction of Chancellor Funeral Home of Florence.
Sara V. Davis
Sara V. Davis died Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003, at her home. She was 74.
Born in Greenville, Mrs. Davis has been a Vicksburg resident for the past 40 years. She was a retired employee of ParkView Regional Medical Center and was a member of First Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles G. Davis, and a son, Larry Davis.
Survivors include a son, Glen Davis of Vicksburg, and two grandchildren, Hannah Davis and Nathan Davis, both of Vicksburg.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Glenwood Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Hess officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Memorial Park.
Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. Thursday until the service at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Tommy Runnels, Jonathan Runnels, Mike Coomes, Tom Akers, Chuck Hopkins and Keith Hilderbrand.
Laura Nell Carter Harkey
ROLLING FORK Laura Nell Carter Harkey died Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, in Pascagoula. She was 79.
Mrs. Harkey was born in Clinton and reared in Rolling Fork. She attended Mississippi College for Women and graduated from Louisiana State University, where she received a bachelor of arts degree.
Before her retirement, she worked for the U.S. Department of Defense as a contract administrator. She was of the Episcopal faith. She was a member of the Daughters of the King and participated in volunteer work.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Wallace and Yolande Louise Carter, and a brother, Wallace Carter Jr.
Survivors include two daughters, Lanny Beery of Pascagoula and Anne Weidig of Baton Rouge; two brothers, James Richard Carter and Laurance Carter, both of Rolling Fork; a sister, Yolande Mayne of Yellow Springs, Ohio; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Chapel of the Cross Episcopal Church in Rolling Fork with the Rev. Kathleen Potts officiating. Burial will follow at Mound Cemetery in Rolling Fork under the direction of Glenwood Funeral Home.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Friday until the service at the church.
Pallbearers will be Gibson Carter, Hollis Carter, Clark Carter, John Abney, John Warren and Mike Shoemaker.
Honorary pallbearers will be Richard Carter Jr., Wallace Carter III, Leland Mayne and Walter Mayne.

Carl D. Rather Jr.
Carl D. Rather Jr. died Monday, Dec. 15, 2003, at River Region Medical Center. He was 85.
Mr. Rather was a native of Chapel Hill, Miss. He was the son of the late Carl D. Rather Sr. and Mittie Ruth Thornton Rather. He had lived in Vicksburg most of his life.
Mr. Rather was a longtime employee of Atlas Construction Co. and retired as an inspector from R.G. LeTourneau.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Laura Elizabeth Worthy Rather, and a sister.
He is survived by two daughters, Carla Rather and Laura Hyde, both of Vicksburg; two grandchildren, Lindsey Stephens and Muck D. Rather So., both of Vicksburg; and a great-grandson.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Fisher Funeral Home with Sam Runaway officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Memorial Park.
Visitation will be from noon Thursday until the service at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be David Hyde, Muck Rather, Darryl Sanders, James Smith, Carl Put and Joe Reedit.
