[7/11/04]All Warren Central coach Randy Broome wants is one week without rain.
After watching many of his team’s summer league games get rained out during one of the wettest Junes on record, the third-year Vikings coach is hoping to get through one more tournament before hanging up the cleats for the remainder of the summer.
The Amateur Athletic Union seniors baseball tournament will be at Viking Field weather permitting starting Monday and lasting throughout the week.
“We’ll be lucky to get 20 games in with our seniors, but most of the teams we talk to are in the same situation,” Broome said. “This has been the worst summer that I have been a part of.”
Eight teams will view for the AAU championship, but the winner will not advance any further. In the past, the tournament champion has had the opportunity to play for a state title and regional berth.
“This one, you get a T-shirt and head to the house,” Broome said with a chuckle.
Jackson Academy, Jackson Prep, Madison Central, Hillcrest and WC all participated in the regular season AAU schedule. Three teams did not want to play in the tournament and the bracket was filled with several traveling tournament teams.
The Junior 96ers, the 16-under group of the prestigious Jackson summer team, as well as the Delta Tigers and Performance Sports will fill out the field.
Performance sports was founded with players from the metro area and is coached by former Callaway standout Javarro January.
“The Delta Tigers are an American Legion 18-older team from all over the Delta,” Broome said. “We’ll get some new teams in here. It should be some good baseball.”
Prep and the Junior 96ers will start things on Monday at 1 p.m., followed by Hillcrest and Madison Central at 3:15. The Delta Tigers will meet JA at 5:30, and Warren Central is scheduled to play Performance Sports at 7:45.
“We’re just trying to get a few more games in before the summer ends,” Broome said. “We’re just playing an old school-type tournament.
“You want to play more games, you better win.”
