The potent bats of Porters Chapel Academy pounded a pair of pitchers from Wayne Academy Thursday night at Pierce Field.
The Eagles ripped 12 hits in romping to an 11-1 decision over the Jaguars. For PCA, this was its third straight win over Spring Break and moves Randy Wright’s club to 6-2 on the season.
“We saw two pretty good pitchers from Wayne, but we swung the bat well,” Wright said. “We hit a lot of line drive balls. If we can continue to hit like that, we’ll be in pretty good shape.”
PCA will get a stiff test today when they travel to Cleveland to play in a round-robin doubleheader with Washington School of Greenville and Bayou Academy of Cleveland.
“We have a pretty young team with seven sophomores starting, we’re just looking to get better,” Wright added.
PCA pitcher Hayden Hales struck out 10 and allowed one hit in the victory.
“Hayden’s now 3-0 for us and he can throw pretty well,” Wright said.
Wayne starter Greg Kirkland kept the Eagles off the board in the first but things changed in the second at bat when Chris Mixon delivered a one-out double to right-center.
With two out and the bases-loaded following walks to Spencer Pell and Cole Smith, Michael Busby roped a double to center, scoring two. Dean Hill came right behind with a double to right-center, plating Smith and Busby for a 4-0 lead.
PCA began the third with three straight infield hits to load the bases. Pell then ripped a shot into right, scoring Hales and Dan Ivey for a 6-0 lead. Mixon then added a run off a wild pitch to make it 7-0 after three.
Wayne (5-5) got its lone run in the fifth when Jantze Perry scored on an overthrow ball to third base on an attempted run-down.
The Eagles made sure there would not be a sixth inning, scoring four times to end the contest. Pell started things with a two-run single to make it 9-1.
Judd Mims knocked Pell in off an infield error. Then, two batters later, Spencer Carney smoked a hit into left-field, scoring Mims with the game-ending run.
“We swung the bats well and really hit the ball well as a team,” said Pell who finished 2-for-2 and drove in four runs.
“I just kept my eye on the ball. Both of the guys they threw were good. They could hit their spots, we just had a good night,” Pell said.
Busby was 2-for-4 and two RBI. Carney was also 2-for-4 and drove in one. Mixon had two hits and scored three runs while Ivey had two hits and scored twice.
