Sam Barnes Jr.
UTICA – Sam Barnes Jr. died Monday, March 21, 2005, at River Region Medical Center. He was 90.
Mr. Barnes was retired and had served in the Army in World War II. A resident of Utica, he was a member of Second Union M.B. Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary M. Barnes; four brothers, Booker T. Barnes, Judge Barnes, George Thomas and Ike Barnes; one sister, Merk Barnes; and his parents, Sam Barnes Sr. and Cora Jasper.
Survivors include two sons, Sammie Barnes and Robert Barnes, both of Utica; four daughters, Dorothy Barnes, Charlene Barnes, Kalean Barnes and Rita Shorter, all of Utica; eight grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Sarah Parson Bell
Sarah Parson Bell died Tuesday, March 22, 2005, at River Region Medical Center. She was 100.
Mrs. Bell was born in Calmeda, Miss., and had been a Vicksburg resident for 90 years. With her husband, she operated Bell’s Cafe in Marcus Bottom in the 1950s and ’60s.
She was a lifelong member and mother of Cedar Grove M.B. Church, Grange Hall community.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George Parson and Cora Russel Parson; her husband, Leonard Bell; her daughter, Lillian Bertha Clark; and two brothers, James Parson Sr. and George Parson.
Survivors include four grandchildren, Carl L. Horne and Carolyn Horne Bradford, both of Vicksburg, Robert Lee Brown Jr. of Dallas and Lynette E. Brown of College Park, Ga.; 12 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives, including Mary Helen Hall and members of the Parson, Horne, Burns, Bradford, Harris and Coleman families of Vicksburg.

Earnest Dillard Jr.
ROLLING FORK – Earnest Dillard Jr. died Friday, March 18, 2005, at Sharkey-Issaquena Hospital in Rolling Fork. He was 47.
A resident of Rolling Fork, Mr. Dillard was the son of Virger and Earnest Dillard Sr.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Dan Dillard.
He is survived by three sisters, Lillie Macon, Annie Dillard and Mary Wilson, all of Vicksburg; three stepsisters, Mary Lovett, Dorothy Earl and Mattie Hall, all of Vicksburg; and a stepbrother, Roosevelt Watkins.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Rose Hill M.B. Church in Anguilla with the Rev. L.C. Adley officiating. Burial will follow at Anguilla Cemetery under the direction of Redmon Funeral Home of Greenville.
Visitation will be from noon Friday until the service at the church.
Dorothy Harmon
TALLULAH – Dorothy Harmon died Monday, March 21, 2005, at University Medical Center in Jackson. She was 81.
Born in Whittemore, Iowa, Mrs. Harmon had lived in Tallulah since 1930. She retired as postmaster from the Delta Post Office.
She served in the Women’s Maxine Auxiliary Corps in World War II. She was a member of St. Edward’s Catholic Church.
She is survived by a son, James LaRue Harmon Jr. of New Orleans; one brother, Clement Dahlhauser of Tallulah; three sisters, Adeline Batchelor of Tallulah, Anita Hall of Alexandria and Gert Paulette of Mound; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Edward’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Ferre D’Cruz officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight at Crothers-Glenwood Funeral Home, with a Mass to follow at 7.
Pallbearers will be John C. Watts Jr., Tilford Watts Jr., Bob Craft, Mark Franklin, Tommy Harmon, Ed Yerger, Bill Yerger Sr. and Johnny Hopkins.
Clara O. Kleinman Malueg
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Clara O. Kleinman Malueg died Saturday, March 19, 2005, in San Antonio, Texas. She was 86.
Mrs. Malueg was born in Vicksburg to Mr. and Mrs. William Magee Kleinman.
She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Roland Malueg; her daughter, Helen Sanders; three sons, Willie Cooper, Leon Malueg and Dennis Malueg; a sister, Mary Belle Kleinman Hodge; two brothers, Terry Kleinman and Louis Kleinman; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and friends.
Services were at 10 a.m. today at King of Kings Lutheran Church, 13888 Dreamwood, in San Antonio. Burial followed at Mission Burial Park North Cemetery.
Jack Norvelle Oliver
Jack Norvelle Oliver, 86, died Monday, March 21, 2005, at River Region Medical Center. He had been a resident of Vicksburg since May 2000, moving here from Memphis, Tenn.
Mr. Oliver was born in Lakeland, Fla., on Dec. 12, 1918. He was reared by foster parents, Edd and Lena Belle McCoy Oliver in Chesterfield County, S.C., near Ruby.
He was the former owner of Oliver Office Equipment Co. in Union City, Tenn., founding the business in 1956 and operating it until his retirement in 1982. Prior to going in business for himself, he sold life insurance for Home Beneficial Life Insurance Co. and Life of Georgia Insurance Co.
Mr. Oliver was a veteran of World War II in the European Theater. He was a tank driver in Patton’s Third Army, serving in Company C of the 782nd Tank Battalion. On April 28, 1945, his unit, while attached to the 97th Infantry, was credited with taking out German anti-tank and anti-aircraft guns near the city of Cheb, Czechoslovakia. Their actions resulted in the capture of a large airfield and some 600 German prisoners. Historians have noted that this effort marked the liberation of the first Czechoslovakian city by American troops.
During his business career, Mr. Oliver was active in the Civitan Club of Union City in the early 1960s when the local club first started a baseball program; he coached minor league baseball for boys during this time. Later, he was inducted into Union City Rotary Club, serving on the board of directors and as vice president, 1976-77. He served on the board of directors for the Obion County Chamber of Commerce in the late 1960s. Also, he was elected as a member of the board of directors of Reelfoot Bank from 1972 until 1977.
Mr. Oliver was a member of Dixie Rod and Gun Club at Reelfoot Lake from 1967 until 1982, serving two terms as president. He had been an avid hunter and fisherman during his lifetime.
In Union City, Mr. Oliver had been a member of the Jones-Walker Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Milton Talley Post, American Legion and the Loyal Order of Moose.
From 1948 until 1984, he had been involved in the Masonic Order. He had served as Worshipful Master of Mount Hope Lodge AFM in St. Stephen, S.C., and he was a 32nd degree Mason of the Scottish Rite in the Memphis Tennessee Consistory. He was also a former member of the Goodwill Shrine Club in Union City. He was of the Baptist faith.
He was married to the former Corrie Lee Adams for 60 years. She preceded him in death in September 2004.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Raymond Shepard of Tallahassee, Fla., in 1998.
He is survived by two sons, James Michael Oliver of Vicksburg and Delton Norvelle Oliver of Charlotte, N.C.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at White Oak Presbyterian Church near Ruby, S.C. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 until 8 tonight at Riles Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Alan Atwood, Wayne Grey, Harvey Huffstatler, David Schaeffer, Ken Ezelle, Mike Kavanaugh and Ron Nassar.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the 782nd Tank Battalion.
Memorials may be made to a favorite charity.
