Everything about Tuesday night’s Vicksburg-Warren Central game seemed normal.

It was decided by one run, WC was playing another tight game, and both teams seemed to save their best for their archrival.

With one swing, though, Eric Douglas messed up the script.

Douglas delivered a two-out, RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to give Warren Central a 3-2 win over the Gators. It snapped WC’s six-game losing streak against Vicksburg, and a five-game slide overall.

“Since my ninth- or 10th-grade year, we’ve lost to them every time we’ve played them. To finally get to beat them is a real pleasure,” Douglas said.

Drew Warnock and Zach Balthrop also had RBI singles for the Vikings (11-7, 3-0 Division 6-5A), while Heath Daigre was 2-for-2 with an RBI for Vicksburg (12-6, 2-1).

Both teams missed opportunities in the fifth inning that could have broken up a tie game. WC second baseman Will Mendrop made a diving snag of a hard grounder to second base. He calmly flipped the ball to Josh Gordon at shortstop for the final out of the inning.

In the bottom of the fifth, Vernon Wolfe caught a Nick Carson fly ball, then gunned Drew Warnock at third base for a double play.

“Everybody got to see Vernon’s arm tonight,” Creel said. “We don’t take outfield for a reason, and that’s for the simple fact that I feel like we have the best arms in the outfield in the state of Mississippi. I don’t want anybody to preview it. I want people to run.”

Vicksburg scored two runs in the second off of Warnock. The Vikings scored single runs in the second and third to tie the game at 2.

“They made some errors there, but (VHS starter John) Hendrix pitched out of them. We could never capitalize on them,” WC coach Randy Broome said.

The game remained tied until the sixth. Balthrop reached on a fielder’s choice, but missed a sign and was thrown out trying to steal second.

Just when it looked like Vicksburg would escape a potential jam, Gordon singled and stole second. Douglas followed with his hit to right center to put the Vikings ahead 3-2.

“Josh has good speed, and I knew with a runner on second if I just hit a ball to the outfield he’d score. I got a full count on me, and just hit the baseball,” Douglas said. “One of our main problems has been leaving runners on base … Coming through tonight and getting them in is what we really needed.”

Warren Central had the lead heading into the seventh, but the drama wasn’t over yet.

Vicksburg leadoff man Steven Price flied out to deep center and Gerald Mims hit a sharp liner to left for the second out before Warnock coaxed a popup from Jordan Henry to end the game.

“They hit the ball well,” said Warnock, who earned the win with two innings of scoreless relief. “They hit it pretty good to the right people.”

St. Al 17, Bogue Chitto 7

Jordan Muirhead and Blake Tidwell had three hits apiece, and Johnathan Longmire went 4-for-5 as St. Aloysius (9-4) beat Bogue Chitto. Marsh Willis earned the win, striking out four.

Ryno Martin-Nez and Pierson Waring added two hits each for St. Al, which put the game away with six runs in the top of the seventh.

St. Al will play at Natchez Cathedral on Thursday.
