Police report few clues in Vicksburg’s only homicide of 2005 while the Vicksburg man who was shot and killed Sunday at his Letitia Street home was remembered by childhood friends remembered him as well-liked.
Kennado Caples, 26, 2708 Letitia, was shot by an intruder about 3:25 a.m. Sunday, police said.
Authorities said he shared the central Vicksburg home with his girlfriend, Kathryn Blue, also 26, who escaped and hid in another part of the home.
Neighbors near Letitia Street and in Kings, where both grew up in Kings, were at a loss Monday afternoon to explain the shooting.
The couple had moved to Letitia Street about a year ago, residents of that area said.
“I think a lot of people really did wish they knew,” a resident of Kings who said she was a childhood friend of Caples’ said when asked about the shooting. “(Caples) was not a troublesome person. He was well-liked.”
The intruder apparently forced his way into the Letitia Street home with a handgun, Vicksburg Police Capt. Mark Culbertson said. Blue said she ran to the back of the home, and Caples and the intruder struggled before he was killed, Culbertson added.
Caples was struck in the neck, and the suspect fled on foot, Culbertson said. Some rounds from a gun were recovered from the scene, he added.
An autopsy was to have been performed on Caples Monday afternoon but the results were not expected to be available for several days, Culbertson said this morning.
The case remained under investigation this morning, and anyone with information in the case was asked to call police at 601-636-2511.
