The swearing-in ceremony for Vicksburg’s mayor and two aldermen will be at 5:30 p.m. July 1 at City Auditorium.
Mayor Laurence Leyens, South Ward Alderman Sid Beauman and North Ward Alderman-elect Michael Mayfield will meet together for the first time as a board four days later.
They officially begin the next four-year terms on July 4, but the ceremony was moved up because of weekend activities at the auditorium and other venues.
Mayfield, who defeated incumbent Gertrude Young in the Democratic primary, met with Leyens and Beauman Thursday for the first time since Tuesday’s election. Leyens and Beauman both won second terms.
At that meeting, Leyens said he wants to focus on neighborhood improvements during the next four years and asked Mayfield, who has said the same, to bring his ideas to incorporate into a four-year plan.
“We need to come up with a way to systematically go door-to-door, neighborhood-to-neighborhood,” Leyens said.
Mayfield said that during the campaign the biggest thing he heard from people in the North Ward was that the city hadn’t done enough in neighborhoods.
“I don’t believe I ran into one individual who didn’t appreciate everything that you have done downtown, but I ran into a lot of citizens who think you need to do more in the neighborhoods,” Mayfield said.
Mayfield has served as the Warren County District 2 supervisor for the past nine years and will have to resign that post before taking city office. Supervisors will have 10 days to call a special election.
The county board can also appoint someone to fill the vacancy until the special election, but the statute does not give a specific time for that action.
Special elections are scheduled for the first Tuesday after the first Monday of November, which would be Nov. 8. Candidates seeking that office will have 60 days before the election to qualify with the Circuit Clerk’s Office to have their names on the ballot.
