A Hinds County teen died early Monday after a single-vehicle wreck on Oak Ridge Road at the entrance to Openwood Plantation subdivision.
The youth was identified as Robert Daniel “Bobby” Tompkins Jr., 19, 1542 Cannada Crossing Road, Edwards, said Warren County Coroner John Thomason.
Tompkins was the driver and sole occupant of a 1998 Ford Ranger and died as a result of body and neck injuries when he was ejected from the vehicle, Thomason said.
Warren County Deputy Sheriff Ford Emery investigated the wreck and Thomason said he was told that Tompkins was headed east on Bowie Road at a high rate of speed when he made a left turn onto Oak Ridge. The pickup went airborne just south of the intersection with Newitt Vick Drive, went over the masonry Openwood sign and landed in a yard on the north side of Newitt Vick, where the truck hit a tree.
Tompkins was pronounced dead on arrival at River Region Medical Center emergency room.
According to records, the wreck was reported at 3 a.m.
It is the seventh fatal wreck reported in the community this year. Most recent was Aug. 26 on U.S. 61 South near the Big Black River where Deshaun David Clifton, 29, of Greenville died, also in a one-vehicle crash.
