With only one day left for the Red Cross shelter at the Vicksburg Convention Center to operate, 28 evacuees remained this morning, and officials and volunteers were doubling up to accommodate them.
The American Red Cross again revised its hotel voucher plan for evacuees, called the Special Transient Accommodations Program.
Under the revision, evacuees who checked into a participating hotel as of Sept. 16 can have room charges covered for a stay of up to 30 days instead of 14. Those who checked in after that date may also qualify for a 30-day voucher if proper identification is provided.
The vouchers are available at participating hotels and evacuees do not need to go to a Red Cross office to obtain them, said Tom Russell, a public information official with Red Cross headquarters in Montgomery, Ala.
Additionally, interviews to help relocate the few remaining evacuees – who must be out of the convention center by 6 Friday night – will shift to Living Word Baptist Church beginning Monday, said pastor Steve Duncan.
Evening meals for evacuees still in town will continue through Friday at the church from 6 until 8 p.m., Duncan said.
