Porters Chapel ran its streak of not allowing a touchdown to five games this season following 49-0 victory over Sharkey-Issaquena, PCA’s third 49-0 decision this year.
Standout running back Chris Mixon rushed for 184 yards on 15 carries and scored three touchdowns to lead the charge. The Eagles (5-0, 2-0 Academy 4-A) have only been scored on once this season, a field goal in the fourth quarter of a 30-3 win over Tensas.
“They are good everywhere,” SIA coach Cori Britt said. “They are fast defensively and run to the ball really well. We just ran into a good football team tonight.”
Sharkey came as close as any team has of punching the ball into the end zone in the waning seconds of the first half.
Porters Chapel held a 21-0 lead and watched as the Confederates (0-5) drove to inside the 1-yard line. With nine seconds left in the half, SIA quarterback Seth Brown was sacked by Matt Hall for an 8-yard loss to end the half with the shutout intact.
“That was a big play for us,” said Hall, who had two sacks on the night. “Two weeks ago we had a field goal kicked on us so we want to go the rest of the season without giving up a touchdown.”
Porters Chapel blew the game open in the second half with a 21-point outburst. Cole Smith hauled in a 7-yard touchdown pass from Hayden Hales and Mixon scored his third touchdown of the night midway through the fourth on a 7-yard run. His first two scores were on runs of 17 and 40 yards.
On the last play of the third quarter, Moose Carney broke free for a 60-yard touchdown and a 42-0 Eagles’ lead.
The clock ran throughout the fourth quarter and the Eagles added a touchdown with less than a minute to play on a Blake Purvis 12-yard run. Evan Rogers was perfect on extra points with seven.
Kenny Simms added a 2-yard touchdown run and finished the game with 44 yards on the ground.
The Eagles’ defense held Sharkey to 31 yards rushing for the game.
“I can’t say enough about our defense,” PCA coach Randy Wright said. “Our kids have a lot of heart a desire to keep people out of the end zone. I think it showed with the goal line stand at the end of the first half.”
Robbie Simms had an interception and Purvis and Sidney Meacham each recovered a fumble as the Confederates turned the ball over three times.
“I didn’t expect the score to be like this, honestly,” Britt said. “I expected it to be a closer ballgame. They are district champs. I don’t think anyone will beat them the rest of the way in the regular season. They will have a few contests in the playoffs, but they are a good football team.”
