Police jailed three suspects Tuesday and believe they have solved the May 8 residential break-in and murder of Kennado Caples. One of the trio was Caples’ girlfriend, who initially reported the crime.

All three remained in the Warren County Jail this morning awaiting arraignment in Justice Court, said Captain Mark Culbertson of the Vicksburg Police Department.

Arrested were Larry Devon Hamblin, 20, and Dwight Albert, 31, 60 Eastover Drive Apt. J1, charged with capital murder, and Kathryn Blue, 26, 1107 Stadium Drive, charged with accessory to capital murder. Blue is Albert’s sister and, police said, was Caples’ girlfriend.

Additionally, Hamblin was charged with two counts of simple assault on a police officer after Vicksburg police found him inside a motel room Tuesday at Battlefield Inn.

“The suspect was attempting to get to some cocaine in the room, and a fight ensued between Hamblin and Investigator Brad Derrington, who was cut on the right eye,” Culbertson said. “The man is 350 pounds, so we had to put several handcuffs together to cuff him. When I pepper-sprayed him, he went down and kicked me in my right knee.”

Culbertson did not receive medical treatment. Derrington was treated and released from River Region Medical Center, a spokesman said.

Hamblin, also charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and sale of cocaine, was the first to be arrested Tuesday, Culbertson said. Albert was taken into custody several hours later without incident at his home and Blue turned herself in to Vicksburg police during the night.

The case had mystified officers who said they could not speculate about why Caples may have been targeted. According to reports, at about 3:25 a.m. Caples, who was 26, was shot several times inside his home at 2708 Letitia St. by a masked intruder.

At the scene and later Blue told authorities she escaped harm by running to the back of the house. Blue’s account “didn’t add up,” Culbertson said. “She had discrepancies in her story, and the evidence pointed to her involvement.”

Culbertson declined to elaborate, saying, “We’ve still got a lot of work to do on the case.”

Culbertson said Blue also declined to take a polygraph exam during the investigation. Police still hope more people will come forward with information. “We are re-interviewing some witnesses today, and we hope that with these suspects in custody, people will come forward and tell us what they know.”

The arrests in the Caples homicide leave two other high-profile cases on the detectives’ agenda. One is the beating and rape of a 91-year-old woman in her home on July 25. The other is the July 17 shooting death of David W. “Jones” Anderson in the parking lot of Elks Lodge on Walnut Street. Rewards have been offered in both.
