The memory of Chris Webber came back to bite Warren Central on Thursday night.
In a scene eerily reminiscent of Webber’s ill-advised called timeout when his Michigan team had none left in the 1993 NCAA men’s basketball final against North Carolina, the Vikings had the same thing happen.
The Vikings were locked in a 55-55 tie with visiting Jim Hill with five seconds remaining. Jim Hill was inbounding under its goal but lost the ball when WC’s Shaun Walker came up with a steal.
Walker was just holding onto the ball, waiting for the time to run out for overtime, when at least two shouts from his teammates came, calling timeout. Unfortunately, the Vikings didn’t have any left.
Jim Hill’s bench knew the situation and asked for confirmation from the scorekeeper. The result was a technical foul on the Vikings.
Jim Hill’s Tristan McGowan hit both foul shots with 0.3 seconds left, giving his team the 57-55 win.
Jim Hill (3-6) advances to play fellow Jackson rival Callaway in the boys finals of the Warren Central Classic tonight at 8:30. WC (3-4) meets archrival Vicksburg in a 5:30 p.m. consolation game.

The Vikings were sharp early, running Jim Hill out of its press with a solid fast break to build a 25-12 lead early in the second quarter. The Tigers, though, changed back to a half-court set, causing the Vikings to go 0-for-10 from the field over the next five minutes of the quarter.
Two late baskets by Jula Pugh boosted WC back in front at 35-32 at the half.
The fourth quarter saw WC’s Shon
