CLINTON – The rematch of the 2005 Class 5A championship game didn’t turn out any better for the Vicksburg Gators than the first go-round.
Hector Custode scored one second-half goal and assisted on another, and Brett DiBiase and Jake Milstead had one goal apiece as Clinton beat Vicksburg 3-0 on Friday night.
Barry Prather and James Gulley also had assists for the Arrows (14-2-3), who beat Vicksburg to win the Class 5A boys’ state title last February.
“We fell apart in the second half. They’re faster than us, especially in the midfield, and we just didn’t keep up with them,” Vicksburg coach Jason Bennett said. “We kind of gave up at the end.”
Vicksburg (8-5-1) controlled the action for the first 20 minutes, and even outshot Clinton 5-4 in the first half. But midway through the first half, the Arrows took control of the game and never let go.
At the 20-minute mark, Prather dribbled up the right side and around a VHS defender before finding DiBiase with a centering pass.
DiBiase was in a pack of Gators, but somehow knocked it into the net for a 1-0 Clinton lead.
The goal was a turning point in the game. For the final 60 minutes, Vicksburg’s scoring chances came one at a time, and were few and far between.
Clinton, meanwhile, started to put sustained pressure on the Gators.
Although they had only one shot in the last 20 minutes of the first half, the Arrows outshot VHS 9-2 in the second.
“We were trying to dribble too much. And with us dominating the attack and trying to dribble, it plays into their hands because they can counterattack with their speed,” said Clinton coach Jeff Long, a former Warren Central girls’ coach. “We talked about moving the ball around more and be more unselfish.”
Clinton’s pressure finally resulted in a pair of goals in the second half.
At the 20-minute mark, Custode booted a corner kick that was headed in by Milstead to make it 2-0. About 16 minutes later, Custode headed in a corner from Gulley on a near-replay of the earlier goal for the clinching score.
“Once we got to two, we went back to a 4-4-2 (alignment) and played some defense,” Long said.
(G) St. Al 5, Murrah 0.
Andrea Harrison scored three goals, including two in the second half, as St. Aloysius (9-3-1) shut out Murrah.
Ansley Fulcher and Rebecca Sigh also scored goals for St. Al. Haley Davis contributed two assists, and Shana Stanton, Marie Booth and Erin Sigh had one apiece.
The Lady Flashes will travel to face Greenville-St. Joe in a Division 3-1A-2A-3A game on Monday at 5:30 p.m.
