Port Gibson came into Tuesday night’s game with Vicksburg with just four wins. Make that five after the visiting Blue Waves upset the Gators 61-58.
Vicksburg (10-9) caught a break at the end when an inbound pass was overthrown with 1.6 seconds left. That allowed the Gators a last-ditch try to send the game into overtime with a three-pointer. Jonathan Phelps, however, was short on his attempt from the corner and Port Gibson had its fifth victory.
“We went through a stretch there where our guys weren’t believing in the system. Now they are starting to,” Port Gibson coach Kim Windom said. “Our younger guys are learning.
“We hit some threes against the zone, and then when they went man, we were able to work our 1-on-1 box play inside,” Windom said.
For VHS coach Dellie C. Robinson, it was more of the same he’s seen this season.
“They came out so hot with six three-pointers, that’s how they got the lead. We had to get out of our zone, go man and when we do that, we can’t match up down low. When teams are making shots, we just are in trouble,” Robinson said.
The Blue Waves made six of their seven three-point shots in the first half. VHS had just two for the entire game.
Karl Fleming and Joseph Porter combined for five treys in the first 10 minutes to hand Port Gibson (5-17) a 10-point lead at 25-15.
Leading by seven at the half, Port Gibson opened with a 6-2 spurt, taking advantage of VHS inside, to go up 39-28. The Gators battled back, getting the spread to five at 41-36 after a Delmon Robinson 3-pointer with 1:40 left in the third quarter.
The Gators missed three tip shots that could’ve made it a three-point game with four minutes to play. Fleming countered by hitting two free throws for a seven-point lead.
Robinson made a layup to finally get VHS within three at 56-53 but a basket by Porter and two free throws from Carlos Barnes kept it a two-possession game.
Brandon Harper scored the last of his 21 points with 1.6 seconds left to set up the game’s final sequence.
Fleming finished with 22 points to lead Port Gibson. Denzel Marbley had 18 and Porter ended with 16.
VHS got 17 from Phelps and 10 from Robinson.
(G) VHS 57, Port Gibson 52.
The Missy Gators nearly saw a 19-point halftime lead disappear but they made enough free throws in the final quarter to hold off the Blue Wavettes.
Vicksburg (10-9) made 6 of 9 free shots in the last five minutes to stop the Port Gibson rally.
Keisha Collins was 3-of-4 from the line while Tiffany Williams was 2-of-4. The two guards combined for 19 points, which helped VHS make up for a poor second half from its post players.
“It’s time for the guards to step up,” said Williams, who had 11 points. “They started pressing us because we weren’t doing what coach (Barbara Hartzog) wants us to do.”
Kristin Ellis scored 10 of her 16 points in the second quarter to help the Missy Gators build a 34-15 halftime lead. Williams assisted with a pair of three-pointers. Ellis, though, had just two points in the second half as Port Gibson (7-16) began coming back in the third.
Katrina Wilson and Fiondrea Ward each had 10 for Port Gibson.
