The Clinton Lady Arrows disposed of one old nemesis on Saturday. Now they need to figure out how to beat one of their new ones.

Clinton beat Vicksburg 3-1 on Saturday to advance to the Class 5A North State championship game on Tuesday night against Tupelo. While Clinton and Vicksburg have each won their share of playoff games against the other over the years, the Lady Arrows have not been able to solve Tupelo lately.

Tupelo has beaten Clinton (17-6-2) three times this season – by scores of 2-1, 3-1 and 3-1 – and four straight times overall. The Lady Waves advanced to the North State title game by beating Madison Central 2-1 in a shootout on Saturday.

&#8220If we get Tupelo, we’re going to try to do some things better defensively. They have a great striker up top, Hannah Weatherly, who scored a lot of goals against us. A lot of goals against everybody,” Clinton coach Thomas Bobo said. &#8220We always play both of those teams (Tupelo and Madison) close. We’ve just got to find a way to get through and win the big one.”

Clinton’s boys also advanced to the North State title game by beating Vicksburg on Saturday. The Arrows (20-3-4) will travel to face Northwest Rankin (23-4-1), a team they lost to in a two-round shootout in January.

The teams played through 80 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime without a goal, before Northwest Rankin outlasted the Arrows 10-9 in the shootout.

Clinton coach Jeff Long said he expected more of the same in the rematch.

&#8220We both possess great defense. They have some young, talented players up top. It’s one of those games that’s going to be who scores one goal,” said Long, who led the Arrows to the boys’ Class 5A state title last season. &#8220We definitely have a team that can finish it off. But I’ve learned that you need a call or two to go your way and a ball to bounce your way.”
