Carson’s perfect game was one for the ages|[3/13/06]

One of the first things any baseball player learns is not to talk about a no-hitter in progress. The second thing is not to talk to the pitcher throwing it.

On Friday, the Warren Central Vikings broke the rules. They talked to Nick Carson. They challenged him to keep his perfect game going. And it didn’t matter.

On this night, Carson was too dominant and Greenville-Weston too overmatched. The senior right-hander not only finished his perfect game, he made it one for the ages.

Fifteen up. Fifteen down. Fifteen strikeouts.

&#8220That’s something new for me,” Warren Central coach Randy Broome said. &#8220I’ve seen a couple of perfect games and no-hitters, but I’ve never seen one where a ball wasn’t put in play. Maybe three, possibly four guys were fouling them off. It was amazing.”

Carson was as efficient as he was dominant. His pitch count barely creeped above 60 and he was never in danger of walking anyone.

The only thing that put a damper on the game was the Vikings’ dominance at the plate. They scored 13 runs for Carson – he had two hits himself – bringing an early end to the game because of the mercy rule. Carson said he was curious to see if he could keep his strikeout streak going through a full seven innings.

&#8220I really wanted to see if I could keep it up for another two innings, but I was satisfied with five innings,” Carson said. &#8220Everything was working. It played out pretty good.”

Carson also overcame the jinx his teammates threw at him. They started talking about his potential perfecto around the third inning, after he had struck out the Greenville order once.

The talk got into Carson’s head, but he was able to block it out and finish it off.

&#8220I was just thinking to myself, keep doing what I’ve been doing and not think about the perfect game,” Carson said. &#8220I was just going out there doing what I do, and if it happens it happens. Fortunately, it happened.”
