Warren County and Youth Court Judge Johnny Price has filed for re-election, saying he’d like to continue working for improvement in the system.
Price was elected judge of the separate courts in 2002 in the first change in the judgeship in 16 years.
He filed qualifying papers on March 6, Circuit Clerk’s Office records show.
“I just think the staff in Youth Court has made extraordinary gains during the last 3 1/2 years that I’ve been in office and I just look forward to continuing those efforts,” Price said.
Among Youth Court’s improvements have been increased involvement with the local public-school system, Price said.
“We’ve got a lot more ideas and plans and look forward to another four years,” Price said.
No other candidate had filed for the county-court judgeship as of Friday. The qualifying deadline for judicial candidates is May 5.
The judgeship is among four for which elections are to be held Nov. 7.
Two of the other races are contested so far. In one, Assistant District Attorney John Bullard is challenging Judge Frank Vollor for one of two judgeships on the 9th Circuit Court. Voters in part of Warren County will see their names on ballots.
In the other contested race the Vicksburg-based judge of the 9th Chancery Court District, Vicki Roach Barnes, is being challenged by Vicksburg attorney Ceola James. Voters in the subdistrict that includes Warren, Sharkey and Issaquena counties will see their names on ballots.
The circuit-court district’s other judge, Isadore Patrick, was running unopposed as of Wednesday, Secretary of State’s Office records show. His name is to appear on ballots in Sharkey and Issaquena counties and part of Warren County.
Also set for Nov. 7 are a race for the District 2 seat on the Vicksburg Warren School District Board of Trustees and an election for the Sharkey County representative on the Mississippi Levee District Commission.
The qualifying period for the school-board race has been set for Aug. 9 to Sept. 8. Candidates for the school-board seat qualify with the Warren County Circuit Clerk’s Office. The position is currently held by Zelmarine Murphy.
Sharkey County’s representative on the levee commission, Lawrence Carter, and no other candidate has qualified so far to run for the post, Sharkey Circuit Clerk Murindia Williams said.
An election is also set this year for Issaquena County’s representative on the levee commission, according to information published by the Secretary of State’s Office. Issaquena Circuit Clerk Erline Fortner said no candidate had qualified to run for that office so far this year.
The other two offices up for election here this fall are for Congress.
Democratic primary elections for both U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives are set for June 6. The candidates for the party’s nomination for representative are Dorothy “Dot” Benford of Jackson, state Rep. Chuck Espy of Clarksdale and the incumbent, Rep. Bennie Thompson of Bolton.
The Republican nominee for the post is Mayor Yvonne R. Brown of Tchula.
The candidates for the Democratic nomination for the Senate are Bill Bowlin of Hickory Flat, state Rep. Erik Fleming of Clinton, James O’Keefe of Long Beach and Catherine Starr of Hattiesburg.
The winner would advance to face the incumbent and Republican nominee, Sen. Trent Lott, and Libertarian Party candidate Harold Taylor of Nesbit in the general election.
