A dispute over money may have been the motive behind the shooting that left a Vicksburg man dead at an acquaintance’s rural home Friday morning, authorities said.

Cetric Ladelle Griffin, 24, was identified as the victim whose body was found outside near the back door of 310 Massey Road, a short unpaved road off Warriors Trail, around 9:30 a.m.

A resident of that address, David Wayne Welch, 40, was arrested and charged with murder following questioning, said Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace. He was being held in the Warren County Jail without bond.

Griffin suffered multiple gunshot wounds, but it was uncertain how many, said Warren County Coroner John Thomason. An autopsy was scheduled to be performed Friday night at Mississippi Mortuary Services in Pearl, he said.

Griffin died shortly after Welch made a call to 911 at 9:12 a.m., when he initially told dispatchers he had shot an intruder on his property, that he didn’t know the man and had been threatened, Pace said.

Investigators, however, determined that Welch knew Griffin and that the two had been together all night before the shooting.

&#8220Our information is that they’d argued several days earlier about money,” Pace said Friday evening. &#8220Griffin claimed Welch owed him and we believe that’s what sparked the confrontation this morning.”

A sawed-off 20-gauge shotgun was found at the scene and is believed to be the murder weapon. A gold car driven by Griffin, but which Pace said he did not own, was towed from behind the house.

Investigators believe the two men were alone, Pace said, and anyone else who may have been on hand was likely not involved in the shooting.

&#8220It’s still unclear the exact events that led up to the shooting,” he said. &#8220That’s part of what our investigation is focusing on.”

Griffin’s driver’s license listed his address as 102 Carver Drive, but he apparently no longer lived there, Pace said. That address belongs to a relative, and Griffin was believed to be living with another relative before he was killed. An obituary received by The Vicksburg Post listed his address as 116 Signal Hill Drive.

Welch’s neighbor, Lisa Miller, said he lived in the house alone.

&#8220He’s a nice guy, he was a quiet neighbor,” she said.

The homicide was the county’s second outside Vicksburg this year. In January, family members found the body of 72-year-old Elizabeth Williams in her home off U.S. 80, the victim of a blow to the head. No charges have been filed in that case.
