Lurline Johnson Cook.

MERIDIAN – Lurline Johnson Cook died Saturday, May 13, 2006 at Beverly Health Care in Meridian. She was 95.

Mrs. Cook was born in Meridian and lived in Vicksburg for several years before returning to Meridian. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Meridian, Robert Matheny Sunday School Class, United Methodist Women and Bible Study Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John H. Cook; her parents, Walter and Cora Thompson Johnson; three brothers, Lamar Johnson, Mortimer Johnson and Walter Martin Johnson; and a sister, Zula J. Williamson.

Survivors include three sisters, Lillian J. Rhodes of Philadelphia, Miss., Lucile J. Reeves of Madison and Sula J. Marsalis of Meridian.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Central United Methodist Church with Brother Jimmy Harrison officiating. Burial will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Vicksburg. James F. Webb Funeral Home in Meridian is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the Lurline and John Cook Scholarship, Candler School of Theology, Emory University, Atlanta, GA 30322, or Walter and Cora Thompson Johnson Scholarship, Meridian Community College, Meridian, MS 39307.

Marguerite E. Evans.

Marguerite E. Evans died Friday, May 12, 2006, at Central Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. She was 87.

Mrs. Evans was born in Houston, Texas, and lived in Sharkey County for 38 years. She lived the past nine years with her daughter in Clinton. She was a member of the Wildwood Baptist Church in Clinton.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin G. Evans Sr.

Survivors include a son, Edwin G. Evans Jr. of Little Switzerland, N.C.; a daughter, Karen Cooley of Clinton; two brothers, Edwin R. Ellis and Charles E. Ellis, both of Houston; four grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church in Anguilla with Rev. Jeff Gilder officiating. Burial will follow at Mound Cemetery in Rolling Fork. Visitation will be from 3 until 4 this afternoon at Glenwood Funeral Home in Rolling Fork.

Al McDevitt.

PAULDING – Al McDevitt died Saturday, May 13, 2006, at University Medical Center in Jackson. He was 63.

Mr. McDevitt, who lived in Paulding, was retired from the the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Vicksburg and the National Guard. He was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church in Paulding.

He was preceded in death by his father, Joe McDevitt.

Survivors include his wife, Brenda McDevitt; his mother, Laura McDevitt of Paulding; two daughters, Robin Currie of Mobile, Ala., and Rebecca Lee of Little Rock, Ark.; two brothers, John Paul McDevitt of Port Tobacco, Md., and Rocky McDevitt of Paulding; and one sister, Martha Deanna Smith of Bay Springs, Miss.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 16, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, with burial to follow in St. Michael’s Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 p.m.-8 p.m. at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Bay Springs.

Mildred Cohn Rotstein.

Mildred Cohn Rotstein died May 6, 2006, at her home. Born in Belzoni, Miss., on March 14, 1915, she was the daughter of Abe Cohn, president of Cohn and Company, the cotton brokerage firm, and the granddaughter of Morris Cohn, owner of Cohn Family Plantations located near Belzoni.

She attended Bowling Green University in Kentucky and later worked for Katz and Bensdorf in Memphis. In 1945, she married Richard Davis of Pine Bluff, Ark., who was active in the Davis Family’s wholesale food and investment business with his brother Harold Davis, an early investor in Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. Mildred Rotstein later married Wilfred H. Rotstein in 1953 and moved to Vicksburg.

She was active in a number of organizations, including Toastmistress, the Jaycettes, the Eastern Star and B’nai Brith. Mildred Rotstein was also a member of the Anshe Chesed Congregation.

She is survived by her son, Ronald Davis Rotstein, a Wall Street investment adviser; a niece, Lynn Zlotnick Harris, formerly of Columbus, Miss., now residing in Port Jefferson, Long Island, N.Y.; Michelle Harris Abramson, a grand niece living in Cambridge, Mass., and a niece, Betty Rotstein Miller, living in Mandeville, La.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Monday, May 15, 2006, in Anshe Chesed Cemetery with Rabbi Vallerie Cohen officiating. Visitation will be at Riles Funeral Home from 1 p.m. Monday until the hour of service.
