Almost two days after he slipped into the Mississippi River, the body of a Crystal Springs man was recovered near the accident site, Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said today.
Roy Jordan, 51, 4105 Rhymes Road, was reportedly standing on a rock dam to fish about 7 Friday night and lost his footing, falling into the river north of Vicksburg and in Issaquena County.
“Just before 7 p.m. Sunday, Deputies Mike Traxler and John Elfer, along with officers with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, recovered the body a short distance of where he was reported to have fallen in,” Pace said.
Jordan and his 16-year-old son, his brother-in-law Steve Harris and a friend David Barnhardt, were fishing near Tennessee Bar, an isolated area west of Chotard Lake. The group was staying for the weekend at the Tennessee Bar Hunting Club.
Rescue boats from the Warren County Sheriff’s Office, Hinds County Sheriff’s Department, Washington County Sheriff’s Department and the Vicksburg Fire Department aided in the search that was called off Saturday due to darkness. Divers from the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks led the search for more than 12 hours.
“This location early-on led to difficulties with the divers because the water at the point where we were searching was 129 feet deep, which made it impossible for divers to dive,” Pace said.
Warren County and state wildlife officers returned to the area Sunday, and recovered the body after it surfaced.
Warren County Coroner John Thomason said the case was turned over to him at the request of Issaquena County. Because the body showed a head injury from the fall, Thomason said, an autopsy was ordered and will be performed at Mississippi Mortuary Services in Pearl.
