Philly, playing its second game of the day, earned its trip to the finals and the regionals by eliminating the Mississippi Mudcats 8-7, scoring the winning run in the bottom of the sixth off a passed ball.

In the 10-year-olds’ tournament, Meridian won its second game of day, beating East Central 10-7 to force a final championship game today at 6 p.m. at Halls Ferry Park.

For the Mudcats, a late game defensive meltdown helped Philly rally from a 6-1 deficit. The Vicksburg team made eight errors, including four in the final two innings.

&#8220We got a big break when they hit one of our kids in the helmet on a relay throw back to the plate. That let Johntrell (Pickens) score the tying run,” said Philly coach John Pickens. &#8220We were fortunate to beat a mighty good Vicksburg team.”

Thomas McCool scored Philly’s game-winning run in the sixth. He led off the at-bat with an infield single against the Mudcats’ fifth pitcher of the game, Hunter Austin. He then took third when a throw down to second got away. It was the eighth Mudcat error of the game.

&#8220When they missed that ball at second, I knew I was going to be in scoring position,” McCool said. &#8220Then when the ball got past the catcher, I thought, ‘Wow, we’re going to the championship.’”.

It looked as if the Mudcats would be there after scoring six runs in the fourth inning, all against a tiring Pickens, who was in his eighth inning of mound duty in two days.

&#8220We kind of pushed him past his limit,” Pickens said. The Mudcats’ outburst was keyed by two-run singles from Reed Evans and Richie Bufkin.

Philly came back getting three in the bottom half of the fourth. Again, the Mudcats helped out with three errors to go with three hits.

In the fifth, down 7-4, Philly scored three unearned runs all with two out.

Both teams had 10 hits. Evans capped a fine hitting tournament by going 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Bufkin and Chase Ladd each had two hits, as did Cameron Upton.

J.C. Bates got the win for Philly with two innings of one-run relief. Pickens led the way at the plate with three hits and three runs scored. Bates and Drew Coats had two hits each.

Orange Grove 19, Philadelphia 5.

The Rage broke open a 1-0 game in the third with seven runs, then added four more in the fourth to take a commanding 12-4 lead.

Offensive MVP James Land led the Rage with three RBIs off three hits. Hunter Necaise went 3-for-5 and scored three times while Chandler Malley had two hits, including an RBI double to cap the seven-run fourth.

Meridian 10, East Central 7.

Will Stokes struck out all three East Central batters in the sixth inning to nail down Meridian’s fourth straight win in the tournament and force tonight’s deciding championship game.

Meridian scored six runs in the fourth inning to break a 4-4 tie. Mason Woolridge and Ryan Lane’s RBI doubles keyed the rally. Woolridge and Trey Holden finished with two hits apiece.
