In a game that lasted all of 54 minutes, the Lawrence County Lady Cougars waited until the final few of those minutes to take a close contest with Warren Central.
Lawrence County scored two runs in the top of the seventh, then got out of a jam in the bottom of the inning to take a 5-3 decision at Lady Vikes Field. It was the first game for WC (5-1) since last Tuesday after two scheduled contests were canceled by the Lady Vikes’ opponents.
“I’m disappointed in that we didn’t win the game, but I am not disappointed at the way we played,” WC coach Lucy Young said. “We played a great hitting and sound fielding team. It certainly has not been to our advantage that we haven’t played since a week ago Tuesday. They may not have been the strongest teams, but we would have gotten in some competition.”
The swift moving game had a combined zero walks from pitchers Mandy Fuller of WC and Bridgee Williams of Lawrence County. Williams scattered eight hits and allowed two first inning runs, along with an unearned run in the fifth inning.
Trailing 3-2 in the fifth, Tay Wince reached on an error and scored on a one-out triple by Fatima Chase to tie the game at 3. A popout to third and a lazy fly ball to center left Chase stranded at third.
“We had opportunities, but we left some runners stranded,” said Young, whose team left a pair of runners in scoring position.
Both teams went quietly in the sixth inning and Fuller retired the first batter before giving up a single to the Lady Cougars’ No. 9 hitter, Tiara Griffin. Two more singles loaded the bases and LC took the lead on an RBI single by eighth-grader Shelby Mitchell, who led LC with three hits and two RBIs. Alex Harris also hit an RBI single to give LC a 5-3 lead.
In the bottom of the inning, Bridget Dillon singled with one out and moved to second on a Wince single. Fran Brown then grounded to shortstop Dee Dee Walker, who tagged out Dillon trying to advance to third and flipped to second baseman Kate Davis for a game-ending double play.
Deer Creek 12, SIA 0.
Deer Creek’s Lauren Irby had seven strikeouts in a four-inning perfect game as the Lady Warriors (12-3, 2-0 District 3-A) routed Sharkey-Issaquena (1-3, 0-2). SIA committed five errors in the loss, helping Deer Creek score its runs on only five hits.
