A Vicksburg High School senior, Lori Dawn Kuhnert, described as vibrant and a good student, died Wednesday in a one-car wreck on Interstate 20.
“She was very outgoing and outspoken, and she loved swimming and music,” her sister, Felicia Kuhnert, said this morning.
Lori, 17, 121 Williams Road, was killed when the car she was driving left I-20 between the Indiana Avenue and Clay Street exits, hitting a utility pole in the median about 10:30 a.m. She was pronounced dead at the scene by Warren County Coroner Larry Chisley.
“It appeared she died from head and body trauma,” he said. No autopsy is planned.
“It was a single-car accident, and she was the lone occupant,” Chisley said.
It was one of three separate wrecks almost in sequence near midday.
Sgt. Jackie Johnson of the Vicksburg Police Department said Lori, the daughter of Sandra Register and Earl Kuhnert, was headed east in a 1997 Toyota Camry when her car left the right lane, crossed the inside lane and overcorrected in the median.
“It’s really hard to determine why this happened,” Johnson said. “But she wasn’t speeding; she was probably going about 55 or 60. Witnesses said she drove through the median about 50 feet, tried to apply the brakes and turned. That’s actually how she hit the post sideways. She had locked the wheels.”
A cell phone may have contributed to the crash, Vicksburg Police Chief Tommy Moffett said.
“A number was dialed in the cell phone, but wasn’t sent,” he said. “So that could be an indication that the young person was using a cell phone. That may have been a contributing factor.”
Lori’s grandmother, Ada Register, said this morning that Lori had missed a couple of days of school because of illness, but she did not know where the senior was headed Wednesday.
“She was there every day last week except Friday and this Monday,” she said. “Then she went up there Tuesday, but had to leave early.”
Vicksburg High Principal Charlie Tolliver said this morning he had told students, faculty and staff about the accident.
“I made an announcement this morning, but I have not had a chance to see any of the students. Most of the seniors were gone yesterday when I found out. Lori was a good student.”
Riles Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
In the other wrecks, four people were injured.
A Texas woman was in fair condition at River Region Medical Center this morning after the Jeep Grand Cherokee she was driving left I-20 near Wisconsin Avenue and also hit a pole in the median.
Amanda Leigh Reynolds, 23, 1917 Carleton Ave., Fort Worth, was eastbound about 3:16 p.m., Patrolman Eddie London of the Vicksburg Police Department said.
In the third accident, three Vicksburg people were treated at River Region and released after a two-vehicle crash on Oak Ridge Road.
Jeremey Roach, 15, was turning his Chevrolet Silverado right onto Oak Ridge from U.S. 61 North about 3:55 p.m. when he lost control and overcorrected into oncoming traffic, Deputy Chris Satcher of the Warren County Sheriff’s Department said.
Nancy Green, 195 Hometown Road, who was driving a GMC Yukon, tried to avoid the truck but couldn’t, Satcher said.
Green and one of her four passengers, Brittany Godwin, also of 195 Hometown Road, and one of Roach’s three passengers, Corrie Elliott, were injured.
Also in the Yukon were Taylor Burton, 15, 3700 Gowall Road, and Katherine Green, 6, and Drew Keith, 15, both also of 195 Hometown Road.
Also in the Silverado were Brittany Keys, 7, and Lance Keys, 9, both of 306 Newitt Vick Drive.
Wednesday’s fatal wreck was the ninth in Warren County this year. The most recent was July 22 when former Warren County Coroner John A. Thomason III died after hitting a natural gas line on U.S. 61 South near Belva Drive.
