David Brown Sr.

LORMAN – David Brown Sr. died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2006, at St. Dominic Memorial Hospital in Jackson. He was 66.

Born in Claiborne County, Mr. Brown was a welder at LeTourneau in Vicksburg. He was a member of Morning Star M.B. Church of Lorman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Maxie Brown and Marie Banks; two sisters; and five brothers.

He is survived by his wife, Mary L. Brown of Lorman; two sons, David Brown Jr. of Lorman and Gregory Brown of Port Gibson; four daughters, Melissa Brown of Gretna, La., Shelia Mackey of Las Vegas, Cassandra Brown of Lavergne, Texas, and Katrina Brown of Antioch, Tenn.; four brothers, John Preston Brown and Tommy Brown, both of New London, Conn., Bob Earl Brown of Longview, Texas, and Johnny Brown of Hermanville; two sisters, Viola Moore of Port Gibson and Lula Williams of Old Lyme, Conn.; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Morning Star M.B. Church with the Rev. Larry Clark officiating. Burial will follow at McCaa Cemetery in Russum.

Visitation will be from 1 until 7 p.m. today at Rollins Funeral Home in Port Gibson.

Thomas J. Carter III.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Thomas J. Carter III died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2006, at his home in Corpus Christi, Texas. He was 65.

Mr. Carter was born in Monroe, La, to Thomas J. Carter Jr. and Virginia Prichard Carter. A retiree from Sears Roebuck Company, he was employed at The Home Depot.

He is survived by his wife, Tecia Saucier Carter; three sons, Thomas J. Carter IV, James E. Carter and Richard G. Carter; and five grandchildren.

A private memorial service will be Saturday evening at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. Cage-Mills Funeral Home in Corpus Christi was in charge of arrangements.

Hoover Gossett.

NEWELLTON, La. – Services for Hoover Gossett, 76, of Newellton, La., were at 11 this morning at Young’s Funeral Home in Ferriday, La., with the Revs. Larry Foster and Dale Zeigler officiating. Burial followed at Legion Memorial Cemetery.

Mr. Gossett was born Jan. 16, 1930. He died Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2006, at his home. Mr. Gossett proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was an avid outdoorsman and a loving father and grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert B. Gossett; mother, Agnes Gossett; and three brothers, Henry, Homer and Hershell Gossett.

He is survived by a wife, Kathleen Gossett of Newellton; two sons, Donnie Gossett and wife, Theresa, of Newellton, and DeWayne Gossett and friend, Jim Fontana, of Houston, Texas; two daughters, Debra Dent and husband, John, of Vicksburg, and Diana Ziegler and husband, Dale, of Lafayette, La.; four granddaughters, Misty Gaar Bradford, McKay Garcia and husband, David, Krystal Ziegler and Karly Ziegler; a grandson, Chad Gossett and wife, Kelly; and six great-grandchildren, Allie Kate Gossett, Mallorie Gossett, Gavin Bradford, McKenzie Garcia, Mary Kathleen Bradford and Mia Claire Gossett.

Pallbearers will be Gary Gossett, Phil Arnold, Mike Gossett, Byron Gossett, Keith Smith and Joe Gossett.

Memorials may be made to Patient’s Choice Hospice in Tallulah.

Lori Dawn Kuhnert.

Lori Dawn Kuhnert died Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2006, as a result of an automobile accident. She was 17.

Born in Vicksburg, Lori was a senior at Vicksburg High School. She loved four-wheeler races, music and swimming.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Gus Kuhnert.

She is survived by her mother, Sandra Register of Vicksburg; her father, Earl Kuhnert of Vicksburg; two sisters, Felicia Kuhnert Corsbie of Haleyville, Ala., and Amy McGuffie of Vicksburg; maternal grandparents, Paul and Ava Register of Vicksburg; and her paternal grandmother, Bernice Kuhnert of Vicksburg.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Riles Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rick McAlister of New Vision Family Worship Center officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. Saturday until the hour of service at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Earl Kuhnert, Alfred Kuhnert, Jim Kuhnert, Than Garick, Derek Corsbie, Bryan Register, Tony Bray and Jerry Vines.

Memorials may be made to a favorite charity.

Arcenia Pierce.

Services for Arcenia Pierce were at 10 a.m. today at Jehovah’s Witnesses Kingdom Hall. Burial followed at Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of Williams Funeral Service.

Mrs. Pierce died Friday, Aug. 18, 2006, at Vicksburg Convalescent Home. She was 92.

Mrs. Pierce was a member of Jehovah’s Witnesses Kingdom Hall and a domestic worker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Pierce; her parents, Sam and Marylizzie Allen Gray; a son, Willie Gray; brothers, Sam Gray, Ruben Gray, Porter Gray and Governor Gray; and sisters, Mae Hannah Gray, Leola Clar and Oleavie Stewart.

She is survived by nieces, nephews and other relatives including the Gray, McDaniels and Stewart families of Fayette, Utica, Vicksburg and Michigan.

Christopher Shaw Rucker.

EL PASO, Texas – Memorial services for Christopher Shaw Rucker, 43, formerly of Lorman, Miss., will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Fayette Methodist Church. He passed away on January 27, 2006, at his home in El Paso, Texas.

Chris was born on January 29, 1962, to Emmett Rucker and Nancy Shaw Green Rucker in Clinton, Okla. He was a graduate of Trinity High School in Natchez and Mississippi State University with a degree in chemical engineering. His interests included raising tropical fish and scuba diving. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman. He was employed by Western Refining of El Paso.

He is survived by his son, Nicholas Shaw Rucker and wife, Angie Rucker, both of Vicksburg; a sister, Sally L. Sparrow of Bradenton, Fla.; two brothers, Claude Rucker and Ernest Rucker, both of Port Gibson; a nephew, Allen Himes; three nieces, Andria Rucker, Laurie Rucker and Leigh Rucker.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Heart Association.

Flossie M. Shiers.

TALLULAH – Flossie M. Shiers died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2006, in Tallulah. She was 84.

Mrs. Shiers was a former resident of Archibald, La.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rebber Dayton Wilkes; a son, Elmer Shiers; two daughters, Ida Jane Shiers and Betty Carol Ellerbe; and two brothers, Elton Keene and Lennis Keene.

She is survived by two daughters, Beverly Womack of Tunica and Joann Free of Ferriday, La.; two sons, Jimmy Wayne Shiers of Louisburg, Mo., and Russell Dayton Shiers of Richmond, La.; two brothers, Spencer Keene of Boyd, Texas, and James E. Keene of Fort Worth, Texas; one sister, Meleter Pennington of Polkville, Miss.; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Mulhearn Funeral Home in Rayville, La., with the Revs. Francis Vriesen and Sam Dunaway officiating.

Pallbearers will be Eddie Guy Shiers, Bud Shiers, Billy Gene Wright, Donald Collins, Truman Collins and Waymon Hales.

Honorary pallbearers will be Lester and Nancy Beadeaux, Mike Morris, Jerry Rice, Ted Cardin and Sue Tarver.

James Oldrum Smith Jr.

James Oldrum &#8220Big J.O.” Smith Jr. (Oct. 23, 1942-Aug. 24, 2006) died Thursday of a heart attack at his home. Born and reared in Greenville, he was a graduate of Tennessee Military Institute and Mississippi State University. Among the many accomplishments in his life, J.O. was an Eagle Scout with two Silver Palms. He was the Mississippi Extension Service youth agent for Panola County, Miss., prior to moving to Vicksburg in 1968 to manage E.J. Platte Fisheries Inc. Since that time, J.O.’s career in the river industry has multiplied to include principal interests in Smith Towing Inc., Yazoo River Towing Inc., Ole Man River Towing Inc., Big River Shipbuilders and Salvage Inc., Beavers Diesel Inc., Limestone Products Inc., Bay City Towing Inc., Vicksburg Plant Food Inc., Mississippi Hardware Inc., Vicksburg Insurance Agency Inc., Krystal Restaurant of Vicksburg and founder of River City Honda.

J.O. served on the Board of Directors for Trustmark National Bank and Vicksburg Hospital. He was also a longtime supporter of Warren County youth organizations, especially 4-H programs.

J.O. Smith was preceded in death by his parents, James Oldrum Sr. and Hortense Creekmore Smith of Greenville; his son, Jinx Peterson Smith Sr. of Vicksburg; and his sister, Katherine Barnard of Grenada.

He is survived by his children, Lela Smith Flowers and husband Carl Flowers, J.O. Smith III and wife Pam Smith, and Patrick Raymond Smith; daughter-in-law, Lyn Luckett Smith; and grandchildren, Jinx Smith Jr., Stanton Smith, Eden Smith, Stephanie Flowers, Sarah Kate Smith, Stafford Smith and Laura Flowers.

He is also survived by his brother, Ephraim M. Smith of Yazoo City; his sister, Melanie Smith Gousset of Grenada; his aunt, Mary Baggett of Sturgis; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Other loved ones include: Greg and Demetra Bryan and their children, Adam and Wes, Teresia, Bendel and Kala White and Rachael Dee Caffey.

Services will be at 5 p.m. Saturday at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church with interment at Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of Riles Funeral Home.

Visitation will be today from 4 to 7 p.m. at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 900 South St., Vicksburg, MS and Saturday from 4 p.m. until the hour of the service at the church.

Pallbearers will be Rusty Blackwell, Carl Flowers, Troy Nugent, Lionel Watts, Bendel White, Steve McKinney, Jim Peay and Bryant McKneely.

Carl S. Tatum Jr.

NEWELLTON – Carl S. Tatum Jr. died Thursday, Aug. 24, 2006, at Glenwood Regional Medical Center in West Monroe, La. He was 63.

Born in St. Joseph, Mr. Tatum was a 1962 graduate of Newellton High School. A Vietnam War veteran, he served in the First Air Cavalry and worked as a farmer. He was a member of First Baptist Church, where he taught the Holt Men’s Sunday school class.

He was preceded in death by his father, Carl S. Tatum Sr.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Arnold Tatum of Newellton; a daughter, Elizabeth &#8220Beth” Tatum Jones of Start, La.; his mother, Lorraine Vines Tatum of Newellton; a sister, Patricia Lowery of Burleson, Texas; a granddaughter; and adopted children, Todd Wesley, Tammy Wesley and Lindsey Sumrall.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Newellton with the Revs. Todd Sumrall and Larry Foster officiating. Burial will follow at Legion Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 until 8 tonight at Crothers-Glenwood Funeral Home in Tallulah.

Pallbearers will be Henry Gales, Robert Goodman, Randy McDonald, Tim Kennedy, Doug Harvill, Josh Vines and David Hale.
