Full day planned for Lady Vikes’ Invitational|[8/25/06]

The Warren Central Lady Vikes went two weeks earlier this season without playing a game. They’re about to make up for lost time.

WC will play as many as four games in the next four days, including a division contest with crosstown rival Vicksburg on Tuesday and three more Saturday when it hosts the Lady Vikes Invitational tournament.

The run begins on Saturday, when Warren Central will play Port Gibson and Wesson in the tournament. WC could meet either Vicksburg, St. Aloysius or Greenville-Weston if it can reach the championship game.

The Lady Vikes have already beaten Vicksburg and St. Al once apiece this season, albeit in a pair of preseason classic games.

&#8220We missed that Thursday game and then that Tuesday, so that was a layoff that we did not anticipate early in the season,” WC coach Lucy Young said. &#8220We need to play three ballgames.”

The flood of games should give St. Al and Vicksburg – both young, inexperienced teams – a chance to work on their fielding, while WC will get a much-needed opportunity to improve its hitting.

The Lady Vikes (1-2) managed only five hits in a 6-2 loss to Northwest Rankin on Tuesday and have struggled to get hits in key situations through their first three games.

&#8220We’ve got to be a base-hitting team. I don’t think we have the physical power to be a long ball-hitting team,” Young said. &#8220We have to be consistent hitters, hit when the time is right and place the ball.”
