Warren Central’s hitting still needs some work, but at least the Lady Vikes are starting to get the hits when they need to.

Fran Brown chopped a single through the right side of the infield with one out in the seventh inning Saturday, scoring Fatima Chase with the game-winning run as WC beat Greenville-Weston 3-2 in the championship game of the Lady Vikes Invitational.

Brown’s hit was the eighth of the game for the Lady Vikes (6-2), who scored 34 runs and went 3-0 in the tournament despite collecting only 22 hits.

&#8220We left runners on base, but we’re getting people there. Maybe this will be a good morale booster and a confidence builder,” Warren Central coach Lucy Young said.

WC plowed through its first two opponents in the tournament, routing Port Gibson 18-2 and Wesson 13-0, before running into a brick wall against Greenville (4-3).

In the championship game, the Lady Vikes couldn’t string any hits together. They had more than one hit in an inning only once in the first six frames – that was the second inning, when Shawn Johnson led off with a single and Tay Wince delivered a two-out base hit. An outfield error on Wince’s hit allowed Johnson to score from first and tie the game at 1-1.

Greenville regained the lead with an unearned run in the fourth inning, but WC’s Mandy Fuller reached on an error in the bottom of the sixth and scored on Johnson’s triple to tie it at 2-2.

&#8220We made a few simple errors that cost us the game,” Greenville coach Evonie Redmond said. &#8220I think we got caught up in the excitement and let it slip through our fingers.”

After Greenville was retired without incident in the top of the seventh, the bottom of Warren Central’s order won it in its half of the inning.

Anna Griffing pinch-hit for Chase and led off with a single to left. Chase re-entered the game to run for Griffing and advanced to second on a walk to Wince. Brown then came to the plate and hit a soft bouncer toward second baseman Neisha Frazier, halfway between first and second base.

Frazier broke toward the bag on contact, however, and the ball found its way into the outfield. Chase never stopped running and scored standing up to give the Lady Vikes the 3-2 win.

&#8220(Young) told me to go and I just went,” Chase said.

Young added that she thought the ball was bad news for the Lady Vikes, and could hardly believe it when it sneaked past Frazier.

&#8220I thought she was going to snag that and roll a double play on us,” Young said. &#8220I think sometimes you try to make a big play before you make the first play, and she took her eyes off it.”

WC 18, Port Gibson 2.

Mandy Bordelon went 2-for-4 and scored four runs, Mandy Fuller doubled, walked three times and scored four runs, and Warren Central routed Port Gibson in the opening game of the Lady Vikes Invitational.

WC scored six runs in the first and fourth innings, and had only six hits in the game.

WC 13, Wesson 0.

Warren Central took advantage of seven walks to score nine runs in the second inning, and went on to rout Wesson.

Kari Lieberman had two hits for WC, including a two-run double that capped the second-inning rally. Tiffany Fuller also had two hits and scored two runs, and Bordelon had two RBIs.

Wesson 12, Port Gibson 3.

Sha Taria Banks knocked in two runs for Port Gibson, but Wesson cruised to the win. Jessica Haynes and Ann Shelby Davis scored two runs apiece for Wesson.

St. Al 3, Vicksburg 0.

K.K. DeRossette singled and scored two runs, and Carrie Hattaway went 1-for-3 with an RBI as St. Aloysius beat Vicksburg. Mary Quinn DeRossette, K.K.’s sister, was 3-for-3 with three singles for VHS.

Greenville 5, Vicksburg 0.

Vicksburg managed only four hits in a shutout loss to the Honey Bees. Darneshia Pruitt was 2-for-3 and Breanna Lewis was 3-for-3 for Greenville.

Greenville 6, St. Al 2.

Catelyn Park went 2-for-4, but Greenville jumped to a 6-0 lead and rolled past the Lady Flashes into the Lady Vikes Invitational championship game.

St. Al scored both of its runs in the seventh inning.

WC 5, Natchez 1.

Warren Central took advantage of nine errors by Natchez to win a key division game on Thursday. Fatima Chase and Mandy Bordelon had two hits apiece for the Lady Vikes, and Kaitlyn Patton doubled and scored a run.
