At least this past weekend, the Vicksburg Missy Gators were keeping it close.

Tuesday’s division meeting with Warren Central at Halls Ferry Park was not. The Lady Vikes (7-2, 2-0) scored 12 times in the first two at-bats and went on to post a 14-0 win over the Missy Gators (0-4, 0-1).

&#8220I’m at a loss of words because there was no progress,” said first-year Missy Gators coach Laura Coulter, whose team kept their opponents at the Lady Vikes Invitational in low single digits. &#8220Definitely this past weekend we were seeing some improvement and that was with two starters missing. Today, we just got worse.”

Lady Vikes coach Lucy Young, on the other hand, saw some carry over from her team which defeated Greenville in the finals of the Lady Vikes Invitational.

&#8220Our defense today was a carry over from Saturday,” Young said. &#8220We’ve still got some work to do on communicating more between our infielders and outfielders on certain balls. I thought Chelsea (Worley) did a good job stepping in at shortstop since Shawn (Johnson) was out with a contact problem with her eye.”

Worley, the normal junior varsity starter at short for WC, handled the step up to varsity, cleanly fielding four plays.

&#8220Yeah, I was nervous, but I guess I did pretty good. The main thing I wanted to do was catch the ball,” Worley said.

Hitting was no problem either for the Lady Vikes. They pounded out 12 hits, including three pinch hits from Worley’s fellow JV teammates.

&#8220One thing we’ve faced this season is the inconsistency of the pitching. Today, we wanted to be more selective. I think we did that because we selected good pitches to hit,” Young said.

Worley got a big hit of her own by knocking in a pair of runs with a first inning single to right that made it 3-0.

WC followed it up with a nine-run second. Kari Lieberman had a two-run single that was followed by a two-run double from Fatima Chase that upped the score to 12-0.

Vicksburg, which was shut out for the fourth straight game, was held to two hits. Ebony Martin had a first inning single while Brandi Martin had a two-out hit in the third inning.

WC got two hits and two runs from Bridget Dillon. Mandy Fuller had two hits and a run scored while Worley, Lieberman and Chase each knocked in two off their hits.
