Spreading the wealth|[8/31/06]

Sharing is always a nice thing to do. And when it comes to football, it’s also a winning thing to do.

Vicksburg, Warren Central and Hinds AHS all split their touches among a number of different receivers and backs in Week 1 of the high school football season, and all scored 30 points or more in blowout victories.

Warren Central threw only five passes in a 37-0 win over Memphis-Kirby, but split their rushing attempts among a dozen different players. Fullback Vic Tyrone led the way with 101 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries, while tailback Michael Holt rushed for 93 yards and a score on 16 totes. Quarterback Jakoby Johnson carried six times for 67 yards and a TD, while no other Viking had more than three attempts.

Hinds AHS opened with a 33-7 win over South Leake and allowed seven different runners to carry the ball. Joshua King led the way with 119 yards and two touchdowns.

Vicksburg, meanwhile, did the most divvying up. Eight different Gators ran with the ball, and quarterback Stanton Price hit five separate receivers on his nine completions in a 42-19 win over Indianola-Gentry.

Wide receiver Vernon Wolfe, who caught only one pass for six yards and carried once for a 13-yard touchdown, said the pattern should repeat itself all season long for the Gators.

&#8220Everybody’s going to have their game and their chance to touch the ball. You might as well be happy with what you get,” said Wolfe, who led the team with 30 receptions in 2005. &#8220We’ve got stars in every position.”

Indeed, the Gators are loaded – and that’s opening things up for everyone.

Delmon Robinson had 87 total yards – 51 rushing and 36 receiving – against Gentry, while receiver John Qualls caught two touchdown passes for a total of 77 yards. Les Lemons, a sophomore who has moved from backup quarterback to receiver, caught two passes for 28 yards and ran four times for 48.

&#8220They know me and Delmon are coming back from last year, and John Qualls and Les Lemons are just as big-time players as us,” said Wolfe, who teamed up with Robinson to account for nearly three-fourths of Vicksburg’s receiving yardage last season. &#8220They know they can hurt them just as much.”

Spreading the wealth can be harder than it seems. On some teams, players would be quick to complain about a lack of touches or a reduced role in the offense. Robinson said most of the Gators’ skill players are on the same page, and understand that having a number of options will probably lead to more success.

&#8220As long as we’re winning, there’s no complaints, no problems,” he said.
