One day, Vicksburg will play a team that has lost a game.

For the fourth straight week, the Gators will do battle with a teeam with an unblemished record when 3-0 Southaven comes to town for a 7:30 p.m. homecoming kickoff.

The Gators (1-2) are fresh off a 20-14 loss to defending Class 3A champion Hazlehurst, a game the Gators should have won, coach Alonzo Stevens said.

&#8220We have so much talent, but we are not executing on all levels like we should be,” said Stevens, whose team has lost its last two games by a combined 12 points. &#8220We are an intelligent ballclub, but we have been hurting ourselves. We have to get mentally focused on each game.”

Vicksburg opened the year with a 42-point performance against Indianola-Gentry, but has been held to a combined three touchdowns the last two weeks. Running back Michael Dulaney and slot back Delmon Robinson have been nursing injuries and their status for tonight’s game is in question.

Stevens said both have been cleared to play, but with Region 2-5A play beginning next week, the two may be used conservatively at best.

&#8220We have been making bad mistakes at crucial times. Those are the things that kill drives,” Stevens said.

In Southaven, the Gators will see more of what they have. The Chargers will ride quarterback Joe Rich, who has tossed six touchdown passes and ran for two more. Terron Freeman has caught two touchdowns this season.

The Chargers’ defense has returned four interceptions and one blocked punt for touchdowns. The Chargers are coming off a 20-14 win over then-unbeaten Millington, Tenn.

Vicksburg is paced by junior quarterback Stanton Price, who has completed 21 of 38 passes for 314 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Sophomore Les Lemons leads the ground game with 121 yards on 22 carries and two touchdowns.

&#8220Nobody has really stopped us this year, we’ve stopped ourselves,” Stevens said. &#8220I felt like we should have won both of those games, but that is in the past and over with.

&#8220Now we have to iron out the kinks, fix the transmission, change the oil and get ready to roll.”
