Subdivision in county to purchase water, gas from city|[9/26/06]

A nearly 200-home subdivision just outside the city limits will soon be the newest customer of the Vicksburg Water and Gas Administration.

The Board of Mayor and Aldermen authorized the agreement at Monday’s meeting.

The subdivision, described by its investors as &#8220very elegant,” will be built near the corner of Mississippi 27 and Lee Road by the local partnership of WMHS, LLC – attorney John Wheeless, brothers Cooper and Bob Morrison, real estate agent Harley Caldwell and builder Johnny Sanders.

&#8220They’re going to build a sewer system and dedicate it to the city’s services instead of building a lagoon,” said City Attorney Nancy Thomas.

WMHS has also recently purchased a vacant lot from the City on Washington between Jackson and Grove streets to build townhouses and retail space.

The agreement is the latest in the recent effort of solving the problem of county residents and businesses tapping into city sewer lines without paying the normal municipal rates.

In August, County Supervisor David McDonald and his business partners agreed to pay for the city’s water at the industrial park they are building on U.S. 80.

Water and sewer rates double for county residents, and gas rates are 25 percent higher.
