Ten weeks into the season, the shuffling continues for Porters Chapel Academy coach Randy Wright. The Eagles offensive line through the first six weeks has seen the most of the upheaval.
Yet Wright says that area appears to be solidified as the same five starters will make their third straight start together tonight when the playoff-bound Eagles (6-3, 3-1) host Prairie View.
The cause of this week’s shuffling is on defense and in the backfield where PCA will be without its leading tackler and top rusher in senior Moose Carney.
“Moose is out with a shoulder injury. But the good news is that other than him and Matt Hall, who we lost for the year at Indianola, we’re in good shape. And our goal all along has been to be healthy for the playoffs,” Wright said.
Carney leads the Eagles with 105 tackles. He also has 497 yards rushing.
He will be replaced on defense by Patrick McVay, while Spencer Pell, Cody Ferguson and Matt Cranfield will divide up the work in the backfield.
“Patrick McVay is a kid who has come in and done well for us at defensive tackle and we’ll move him into Moose’s spot. Jacob Morgan will come in and play at defensive tackle. Both of those guys have been backups for us on the offensive line,” Wright said.
The key for the Eagles has been the return of a couple of players who were hurt either in the preseason or the offseason. Cranfield, who had elbow surgery after the Eagles’ state championship baseball series, came back last week and will help out in the backfield and at defensive end.
Center Brian Holloway came back three weeks ago after a preseason injury and is now anchoring the offensive line.
“Brian was our starting center and we were without him for five weeks. But he’s back we were able to move Chris May, who had been at center, back to right guard. When Matt went down, we moved Brad Pennington into that spot. We also have Joey Gerache now playing at left tackle. Michael Roach is the only linemen to play in the same position all season,” Wright said.
Prairie View (3-6, 1-3) comes is as fourth in District 4-AA.
“They are a team that can beat us. This is a big game for us because we want to keep the momentum we’ve built up and make it three weeks in a row. Prairie View is big and strong and they’ve beaten Deer Creek,” Wright said.
As it stands now, PCA is awaiting to see how the three-way race between Centreville, Central Private and Bowling Green plays out. PCA, the No. 2 team in its district, will gets whichever team finishes second. A coin flip will determine the site for the Nov. 10 game.
