A Vicksburg police officer was hit by a car Thursday night while trying to arrest a 19-year-old man in a stolen vehicle.
Deaunte Lewis, 19, 220 Demby Drive, was charged with aggravated assault and auto theft.
Police said he hit David “Bo” McLeod, a patrolman in the Vicksburg Police Department’s investigation division and a K-9 handler.
Lt. Bobby Stewart said McLeod’s left leg was “heavily sprained.” He was treated at River Region Medical Center and released.
Several officers surrounded Lewis near a fuel pump at a BP station on U.S. 61 South at about 7:45, an hour after a Buick Roadmaster was reported stolen from an Exxon station on Mission 66.
When they ordered Lewis to stay where he was, he jumped into his car and drove away, hitting McLeod, Stewart said.
“Officer McLeod was standing in front of the vehicle,” Stewart said. “While they were trying to detain the subject, he drove off at a high rate of speed and struck him.”
About a half-hour later, police found Lewis in Cedars Estates after he bailed out of his car near Vicksburg Municipal Airport.
He remained in the Warren County Jail this morning without bond.
