A change of defenses by new St. Aloysius coach Penn Majors did more than just slow down Wesson, it also ignited the Flashes’ offense.

Despite giving up a game-high 32 points to the Cobra’s hot-shooting guard Brandt Hood, the Flashes had too much firepower, placing four in double figures to cruise to the 68-46 victory Tuesday night at St. Al.

Chase Smith led all four of the Flashes’ seniors in double figures with 23 points and 13 rebounds. Marsh Willis had 14 points and five assists while J.R. Burnett scored 13 and Chris Johnson had 12.

&#8220Wesson came out extremely hot and they were long deep shots against our zone. I called timeout when we got down 14-5 and put us in man. That helped, even though, they did hit some more deep 3-balls,” Majors said. &#8220We got back into our two-set and the kids began running it like you’re supposed to. We got the open three look in the corner and then started swinging it back and going high/low.”

After missing 3 of 12 shots in the first quarter, St. Al (6-2) went 22-of-34 in the final three quarters, including a blistering 73 percent in the second half.

&#8220His offense is built around the shuffle cut and tonight it was real effective in the second half,” said Johnson, who had four assists. Smith also had four assists as the Flashes pulled away in the fourth quarter.

Smith had eight of his 23 in the second quarter as St. Al worked the nine-point deficit down to one. Then Johnson hit a 3-pointer to give St. Al a 28-26 halftime lead.

Willis got untracked in the third quarter with a pair of treys while Smith did a little bit of everything with four rebounds, three assists and a pair of blocked shots.

&#8220We started executing better and we kind of know now what he (Majors) is talking about,” said Smith, whose steal and layup put St. Al up 42-32.

The lead soon ballooned to 20 as Wesson’s long-range shooting evaporated.

The Lady Flashes (6-3) overcame an 23-15 halftime deficit and an injury to Kayla Childress to turn the tables on Wesson.

The Lady Cobras had beaten St. Al by 22 points earlier in the season.

&#8220Our defense just played awesome in the second half,” first-year St. Al coach Kyt Bonner said. &#8220We slacked up there in the second quarter, but picked it back up in the second half. Eighteen of their 23 points in the first half were off threes, and we can’t let that happen. We fixed it.”

The Lady Flashes also had to do it without Childress, who broke her nose in the third quarter and did not return.

Sarah Kerut stepped up, scoring 16 of her game-high 23 points in the third quarter as St. Al went from eight-down to five-up at 34-29.
