State funding will be the key to resurfacing a majority of roads outside municipal limits in Warren County most in need of work.
In its annual update of its list of roads in need of work, ABMB Engineers Inc., the county engineering firm, said six of the 10 roads are eligible for Mississippi Department of Transportation’s Office of State Aid Road Construction.
Of the $1,569,619.54 available to Warren County for road and bridge repair projects, about $250,000 remains to be dedicated to a specific project, County Engineer John McKee said while presenting the plan to county supervisors Thursday.
In turn, supervisors will decide which projects to bid, based on money available. Supervisors also have a separate, ongoing road program funded with revenue taxes on four local casinos.
The state funds can be rearranged to address ongoing resurfacing needs, such as Tucker Road and Eagle Lake Shore Road, McKee said.
As is the case when the plan is updated, the report contains updates on projects in design and construction phases, the funding sources and the estimated construction costs, the bulk of which consists of road resurfacing projects or bridge replacements.
Road conditions are based on inspections completed by January. Ratings criteria included the amount of cracking, overall roughness and the traffic load.
Conditions on roads listed as the 10 worst on last year’s list ranged from 35 to 54, while this year’s bottom 10 ranged from 35 to 46.
Sections of 338 roads are rated this year, up from 328 last year. Expected repair costs stayed the same on most but changed notably on some, including a $16,000 increase in expected cost to resurface a 3.5-mile section of Bovina Cutoff Road and a $14,000 drop on the estimate to redo Maria Drive.
State aid projects in the design phase include:
