Plans for an $8 million expansion of Keyes Recycling are on hold until next month when more details will be presented to the Vicksburg Board of Zoning Appeals.
Four of six board members tabled a decision Tuesday on Keyes’ proposal for an 82-acre junkyard to be built on North Washington Street because no site plan was available.
“We were given a proposal that wasn’t really complete. We needed more information,” said board member Jack Burrell.
“As far as we know, he has plans to possibly use all 82 with scrap metal and a junkyard. That’s enormous. It just wasn’t clear,” Burrell said.
Robert Keyes and his son, Robert Keyes Jr., want to expand their business to allow for automobile crushing.
The business currently sits on a six-acre site just outside the city limits. The expansion would be adjacent to Vicksburg Recycling and store the car-crushing equipment and all the non-ferrous, or iron-based, materials it handles.
The land is already zoned L-2 Heavy Industrial, and Keyes was requesting a special exemption to allow for the equipment on the parcel on the east side of the street between 4440 and 4776 N. Washington.
Both Keyes and his son were present at Tuesday’s meeting, as well as quite a few neighbors who came to listen to the proposal, Burrell said.
“The plan calls for the site to be open 24 hours a day. That’s very different than normal working hours,” he said.
Board member Fred Katzenmeyer said the proposal will be discussed once details are included, but it’s likely the expansion will be approved.
“We don’t need an 82-acre junk yard in Vicksburg,” he said. “But it’s zoned industrial, so I don’t see how we can deny the permit.”
The next board meeting is March 6.
