The rematch of last year’s Academy-A championship series turned out to be no match at all.

Michael Busby went 3-for-4 with a double and three runs scored. Robbie Simms and Hayden Hales each knocked in two runs, and Porters Chapel continued its early-season offensive onslaught with a 10-0 rout of Huntington School on Tuesday.

Cole Smith also walked twice, scored two runs, and threw four shutout innings on an economical 45 pitches. Smith allowed three hits, walked none and struck out three.

PCA improved to 6-0 with the win, a streak that has included wins over perennial MPSA powers Hillcrest, Jackson Prep and Huntington (1-4). In five of the six wins, PCA has scored at least nine runs.

&#8220We’re just good. I don’t want to brag, but a lot of us have been out here for a while and baseball is second nature. And with baseball comes hitting,” said Simms, who went 1-for-3 with a two-run double against Huntington and also pitched one inning of scoreless relief.

PCA only had seven hits on Tuesday, but most of them came in key spots. That, along with five Huntington errors, allowed the Eagles to score in every inning before finishing it via the mercy rule in the fifth.

The Eagles started strong, loading the bases with no outs in the bottom of the first. A botched double play ball and a fielder’s choice brought in two runs, then PCA turned up the heat with a two-out rally in the second inning.

After Huntington starter Brent Bradeley retired the first two batters, he walked Smith and allowed a bloop single to Busby. Huntington center fielder Jordan Wilson misplayed the ball, allowing Smith to score from first and Busby to move up a base. Moose Carney followed with an RBI single and Hales capped the inning with an RBI triple to the gap in right-center to put the Eagles ahead 5-0.

Huntington committed three more errors over the next two innings, bringing in four runs as PCA stretched its lead to 9-0. Hales ended the game in the bottom of the fifth with a two-out, RBI infield single.

In all, Huntington’s five errors led to six unearned runs for PCA, and a balk moved the final run into scoring position. Coach Mitch Ashmore laid part of the blame for the Hounds’ struggles on a late start to the season. Huntington advanced to the MPSA Overall basketball tournament, and had several baseball players playing with the basketball team. Because of that, the Hounds didn’t play their first baseball game until Saturday.

&#8220Right now, we’re trying to figure out a couple of positions. We’ve had to move some people around,” Ashmore said. &#8220We’re making a lot of mistakes that our ballclub has not made the last couple of years.”
