Logan Hale is becoming quite fond of the River City.
Seven days after defeating Warren Central, the Madison Central right-handed pitcher delivered a three-hit gem Tuesday night in a shocking 11-0, run-rule victory over Vicksburg High.
Madison Central (9-2, 3-0 Division 3-5A) took sole possession of first place in the race for the Division 3-5A championship. These two meet again on Friday in Madison.
“Tonight my arm felt a lot looser than last week,” Hale said. “I got a lot of pitches over the plate and was able to get it done.”
Mixing a hard fastball and nasty slider, Hale allowed only three singles and struck out nine. Only one Gator reached third base all night and he was tagged out after getting hung up between third and home.
“He’s a good pitcher, no doubt about it,” Vicksburg (6-4, 1-1) coach Jamie Creel said. “For whatever reason, though, we didn’t show up at all. I just hope we have a better showing on Friday.”
As dominant as Hale was, he benefited from a porous VHS defense. The first six Madison Central runs were scored directly off of miscues. With two outs in the top of the third of a scoreless game, Spencer Booth walked and scored on Tyler Akins’ single and error for a 1-0 lead. Akins scored one batter later on the third of Vicksburg’s six errors on the night.
The Jags broke the game open with a six-run fourth inning. Ryne Smith’s two-RBI single capped the inning that saw Madison collect five hits and the Gators commit two more errors. Madison sent 10 batters to the plate before Vicksburg starter Stanton Price could get out of the inning.
Price, Vicksburg’s top starter, breezed through the first two innings in what was billed as a classic pitcher’s duel. He worked four innings and struck out six.
“They are much better than what they showed tonight,” Madison Central coach Gregg Perry said. “We didn’t see the real Vicksburg tonight. We have to prepare for Friday and come out and play hard again.”
Creel said the short layoff is a positive.
“That’s the great thing about baseball, the ability to come back after just a couple days, whereas in football, you have to wait a week,” Creel said. “The bar is set and the challenge is ready to be made. We just have to step up and see what we have under our chests, see if we have a little heart and come out fighting.”
Stanley Bufkin relieved Price in the fifth, retired the Jags in order, but fell victim to theirbats in the sixth. Booth singled to open the inning and scored on a laser-beam home run by Akins for a 10-0 lead. With one out, Ben Hodge reached on a fielder’s choice, stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored the final run on a wild pitch.
Vicksburg went quietly in the sixth to end the game.
“We were able to take advantage of a few mistakes and score some runs,” Perry said. “In a game like this, with those two type pitchers on the mound, you have to catch a break.”
Tyler Wells, Price and Vernon Wolfe each had a single for Vicksburg.
Warren Central 7, Greenville 1
Warren Central scored three runs in the seventh inning to break open a close game and give the Vikings their first win in Division 3-5A.
Chris Whittington pitched a complete game, allowing four hits. Greenville scored its lone run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Harry Ferguson doubled for WC (2-7, 1-2), which is scheduled to host the Hornets on Friday night.
