Russell B. Barnes Sr.

Russell B. Barnes Sr. died Saturday April 21, 2007, at River Region Medical Center. He was 89.

A native and lifelong resident of Vicksburg, Mr. Barnes was the son of the late Tray Russell and Eunice Johnson Barnes. Mr. Barnes owned and operated Barnes Brothers Body and Cabinet Shop for many years. He was a member of the Vicksburg Elks Lodge No. 95 and Vicksburg Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Evelyn Erwin Barnes; and a brother, Elmer Barnes.

Mr. Barnes is survived by his son, Russell W. &#8220Rusty” and his wife, Judy Barnes of Vicksburg; two daughters, Rebecca B. Cochran and her husband, Del, of St. Charles, Mo., and Patricia B. McMichael of Russellville, Ark.; grandchildren, Bradley Barnes and his wife, Sherra, Clay Barnes and wife Daisha, Carl &#8220Buddy” Wooten and wife, India, Karla Ashley, Lt. Troy Miller and wife, Dawn, and Matthew Cochran; great-grandchildren, Dalton Emly, Olivia Barnes, Joshua Ashley, Cole Ashley, Abigail Barnes and Barrington Barnes, Mary M. Wooten and Wil Wooten; a sister, Ella Mae Logue; and nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 24, 2007, at Frank J. Fisher Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Carl Barnes officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight at Fisher Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Buddy Wooten, Bradley Barnes, Christopher McMichael, Del Cochran, Trey Logue, Lt. Troy Miller, Buddy Johnson and Matthew Cochran.

Honorary pallbearers will be John Luckett, Earnest Barlow, Tiny Antoine, Chris Antoine, George Cain, S.T. Barnes, Herbert Wilks, Paul Barrett, Fred Harris, Tom McClain, Greg Kitchen, John Barnes, Hugh Logue, W. E. Johnson and Jane Windrow.

Earl Bryant

TALLULAH – Services for Earl &#8220Poodle” Bryant were at 11 this morning, April 23, 2007, at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jean Foreman officiating. Burial will follow at Silver Cross Cemetery under the direction of Glenwood Funeral Home in Tallulah. Visitation was from 6 until 8 p.m. Sunday.

Mrs. Bryant died Saturday, April 21, 2007, at her home in Tallulah. She was 88.

Born in Dunn, La., Mrs. Bryant retired as a second-grade teacher from Tallulah Elementary School. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Tallulah.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jake Bryant; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. F.A. Pott; and two sisters, Mildred Holland and Lorraine Walter.

She is survived by a son, Jimmy Bryant; three sisters, Jiggs McDuff, Dacky Tucker and Ruth Ester; a granddaughter; and other nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Dalton Fortenberry, Ed Mills, Tommy Bishop, Jim Tucker, Robert Kivett, Ken Elledge, J.W. Mercer and Ted Osborne.

Memorials may be sent to First United Methodist Church in Tallulah.

Albert J. Caldwell

LOS ANGELES – Albert J. Caldwell, a Vicksburg native, died Friday, April 20, 2007, at his home in Los Angeles. He was 77.

Mr. Caldwell was preceded in death by his brother, Leo Caldwell; his mother, Thelma Lee; and his father, Johnny Caldwell.

He is survived by his wife, Eva Elissie Caldwell of Los Angeles; one daughter, Nicole Caldwell of Los Angeles; two sons, Ronald Caldwell and Damon Caldwell, both of Los Angeles; two sisters, Sophie J. Nichols of Vicksburg and Dr. Flora A. Caldwell of Oxford; two grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Inglewood Mortuary of Los Angeles has charge of arrangements.

James Roy Duncan

GRAVETTE, Ark. – James Roy Duncan, 68, of Gravette, Ark., died Thursday, April 19, 2007, at Northwest Medical Center of Benton County in Bentonville, Ark. He was born on Oct. 1, 1938, in Hiwasse, Ark., to Winfred Duncan and Camille Bates Duncan.

He was born in Arkansas and spent time in California and Mississippi. He returned to the area in 1974. He was a member of the Hiwasse Church of Christ. He worked from 1974 to 1983 at Skippys in Jane, Mo., also at Daisy in Springdale and C&W Homes in Vicksburg.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, John Duncan.

He is survived by his wife, Lois Duncan of Gravette; one son, James David &#8220Rocky” Duncan of Gravette; two daughters, Jackie Parks and husband, John, of Vicksburg, and Judy McCollough of Springdale, Ark.; four grandchildren, Kimberly Newman of Vicksburg, Justin Huber and wife, Holly, of Jane, Joshua Feagin of Springdale and Levi Duncan of Gravette; and four great-grandchildren, Spencer Carney, Kortni Newman, Beth Thornburg and Hannah Huber.

A funeral service was at 10 a.m. today at Bella Vista Funeral Home Chapel, 2258 Forest Hills Blvd., Bella Vista, Ark., with Mr. Glenn McCoy and Mr. Gene Roberts officiating. Burial was at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Hiwasse.

Mable Martin Gardner

SHREVEPORT – Mrs. Mable Martin Gardner, 92, passed away on Wednesday, April 18, 2007, after a lengthy illness. Visitation will be held from 5 until 7 tonight, April 23, 2007, at Osborn Funeral Home.

Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 24, 2007, at the chapel at the funeral home. Officiating will be Dr. T. Floyd Davis of Woodridge Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Forest Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Gardner was a native of Ida, La., and a resident of Shreveport for 71 years. She was a member of Woodridge Baptist Church.

Mrs. Gardner was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Joseph Homer Gardner; a son, William Ronald Gardner; and brothers, William Scott Martin, Edmund R. Martin and Robert Newton Martin.

She is survived by two sons, Homer R. Gardner and his wife, Shandra, of Vicksburg and John R. Gardner and wife, Mary, of Shreveport; a daughter-in-law, Lynne Gardner of Purvis; six grandchildren, Christopher Gardner and wife, Cheryl, of Cumming, Ga., Melissa Barker and husband, Bruce, of Jackson, Nathan Gardner and wife, Roxanne, of Woodville, Walker Gardner and wife, LaQuita, of Laurel, Amy Gardner and Rob Gardner, both of Shreveport; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Mattie Terry of Ida; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Steve Gordon, Alton Johnson, John Kish, Randy Loe, Chuck McInturf and Perry Woods.

The family requests that memorials be made to the Woodridge Baptist Church Building Fund, 850 E. Bert Kouns Industrial Loop, Shreveport, LA 71106.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the sitters of Home Instead Senior Care, the nurses and staff of the Guest Care at Spring Lake and of Agape Hospice Care and Dr. Clarence Teagle.

Birthenia Thomas Jackson

Services for Birthenia &#8220Tina” Thomas Jackson were at 11 this morning, April 23, 2007, at Word of Faith Christian Center with the Rev. Phillip Burks officiating. Burial followed at Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home.

Mrs. Jackson died Wednesday, April 18, 2007, at River Region Medical Center. She was 77.

Mrs. Jackson was a retired cook at the Holiday Inn and a member of Standfield M.B. Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Behlah Ford Thomas, and her husband, Willie Jackson Sr.

She is survived by five sons, Vernon Thomas and Willie Jackson Thomas, both of Vicksburg, Milton Jackson of Lake Charles, Robert Jackson of Atlanta and Billy Anthony Thomas of Rochester, N.Y.; four daughters, Sharon L. Johnson and Mary Carolyn Jackson, Johnnie E. Jackson and Shirley Renee Swartz, all of Vicksburg; two sisters, Onetter E. Burns of Stone Mountain, Ga., and Leflora T. Pierce of Lawton, Okla.; 27 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Flora A. Ragland

Services for Flora A. Ragland were this morning at Cedar Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Hess officiating.

Mrs. Ragland died Saturday, April 21, 2007, at her home. She was 96.

A native of Attala County, she had lived most of her life in Vicksburg. She retired as a waitress for Goldie’s Bar-B-Que.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Ragland; three sisters; and two brothers.

She is survived by 21 nieces and nephews.

Fisher Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Irene T. Walls

Irene T. &#8220Priscilla” Walls died Sunday, April 22, 2007, at her home. She was 70.

Ms. Walls retired from Warren-Yazoo Mental Health. She served as a choir member for Locust Grove, Brown Chapel and Calvary M.B. churches. She was also a member of Rainbow Chapter No. 51 Order of Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Alex Walls Sr. and Mandy Newsome; two brothers, Alex Walls Jr. and Hosie Shanklin; and two sisters, Sallie Moore and Annie Pearl Styles.

She is survived by a son, Anthony Walls of Vicksburg; three daughters, Mary Brown of Vicksburg, Arlene W. Johnson and Beverly Walls-Webb of Ozark, Ala.; a daughter she reared, Jacqueline Walker of Vicksburg; a sister, Lillie Carpenter of Waukegan, Ill.; 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and other relatives, including the Hunter, Ellis and Johnson families of Vicksburg.
