A second case of West Nile virus was reported in Warren County Monday, one of nine new cases in the state.
The other cases were reported in Adams, Forrest, Jones, Lamar, Lauderdale, Leake, Madison and Wayne counties.
Since April, 85 human cases of the mosquito-borne virus have been reported across the state. Madison County reported 18 of those cases — the highest number.
Dr. Daniel Edney, who practices internal medicine at The Street Clinic, said symptoms of West Nile virus are often the same as common summertime viruses and may include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, a rash, muscle weakness and swollen lymph nodes. Most West Nile cases are treated the same way as a summertime virus, as well.
While most cases of West Nile are mild to moderate, the infection can cause encephalitis or meningitis, which can lead to paralysis, coma and death.
Still, Edney didn’t believe people should be worried, but should be cautious. The elderly, the very young and people who are already ill are more susceptible to severe cases than other people may be.
To reduce the risk of contracting West Nile virus, MSDH encourages Mississippians to remove sources of standing water, wear long-sleeved shirts and pants when in mosquito-prone areas, apply repellent and avoid mosquito-prone areas — especially between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.
The virus has been prevalent in Mississippi and other mostly southern states since 2002.
