Two men were hospitalized following a Friday afternoon shooting, the second shooting reported in Vicksburg in 24 hours.

Christopher Blackmore, 25, 450 Lakefield Drive, and Kenya Johnson, 31, no address available, were both shot at least once in the upper back, said Vicksburg Police Lt. Bobby Stewart. Both were taken to River Region Medical Center and were later transferred to University Medical Center in Jackson. No information on their conditions was available Friday evening.

Stewart said the shooting, reported at 4:19 p.m., apparently occurred in the area of First East and First North streets.

By around 8 Friday evening, police had named a suspect, Tommy Ames, 33, no address available. “He appears to have been a passenger in the vehicle,” said Stewart. Ames faces two counts of aggravated assault and one count of felony weapon possession. He is the only suspect, Stewart said. A motive had not been determined.

According to police reports, after the shooting, Johnson, who was driving a black Nissan Maxima, drove about three blocks to Openwood and Locust streets, where he stopped near Carson Bail Bonds and help was summoned. Police closed the 1100 block of Openwood for about an hour while they investigated. Many neighbors and employees of surrounding business were unaware of what had happened until emergency personnel arrived.

“I was pulling a transmission,” then, “all I heard was sirens,” said Jay Turner, an employee of Boyd’s Car Care on Openwood.

Another Boyd’s employee, who asked not to be identified, said he looked up from his work to hear bystanders yelling “911 is on the way.”

Police are also investigating a shooting that happened about 1 a.m. Friday.

Geary Guise, 22, 502 Farmer St., was shot in the right thigh on Mission 66 by a man driving a brown or beige pickup, police reports said. Guise and three passengers were driving along Mission 66 when Guise stopped his vehicle because the truck flashed its lights, reports said. When Guise got out, the driver shot him.

Guise was driven to River Region, then transferred to UMC. No information on Guise’s condition was available, a UMC spokesman said late Friday.
